🚄 The Government of Alberta's new Passenger Rail Masterplan presents new opportunities to put skilled tradespeople to work. Building Trades members are ready to build these projects on time and on budget.

Alberta's Building Trades Unions are building relationships across every sector to put journeypeople and apprentices to work. Earlier this year, BTA Executive Director Terry Parker and Canada's Building Trades Unions Executive Director Sean Strickland signed an agreement with Friends of CABR to work together on building a passenger rail system between Calgary and Banff. This announcement by Premier Danielle Smith and Minister Devin Dreeshen is a huge step forward! 🚞

Building greatness begins with strong mentorship. Just take it from our Building Trades Indigenous Role Model of the month, Randy Flying Buffalo, member of the IBEW Local 424 Union! ⚡️

Through Minister Rajan Sawhney and the Government of Alberta's $300,000 investment in the Building Indigenous Mentorship and Pathways Pilot Program, the BTA is working to connect Indigenous people entering the trades with union-led mentorship tools to build greatness!

Today, the BTA, its affiliates and the GPMC-NMC visited the world-class Borouge International Joffre Site to see the incredible work being done by many Building Trades members on its E1 shutdown turnaround!

On the tour was BTA Executive Director Terry Parker, BTA Chair Rod McKay, GPMC-NMC Executive Director Brett McKenzie, GPMC-NMC Labour Representative Trent Valentine, along with leaders and representatives from across Alberta's Building Trades Unions.

This incredible opportunity was made possible by Shutdown Turnaround Leader Marc Wahl and his team, who welcomed the group to the site. Their leadership on the job and partnership with our skilled trades workforce continue to make the Joffre turnaround a success.

Projects like this show what is possible through strong relationships between industry and labour, and collaboration across the trades. That's why the BTA is committed to continuing to work with great partners like Borouge International and across its affiliated unions to drive economic growth and create more opportunities for Building Trades members.

Congratulations to all apprentices who brought their skills to the 2026 Carpenters’ Western Apprenticeship Competition in Edmonton.

None of this would have been possible without the incredible work of the Alberta Carpenters Training Centre team. These folks work tirelessly to ensure that carpenters, scaffolders, and others receive the highest-quality training! This is what building greatness looks like!

The BTA Strategic Engagement & Development Director, Rob Calver, participated on a panel discussing workforce development at the Construction Innovation Centre Forum.

Rob joined Simrat Slade and Kyle Duperron from Alberta's Jobs, Economy & Trade Ministry, as well as Dr. Joseph Marchend from the U of A and Dr. Pouya Zangeneh from the U of C. The group discussed the challenges and opportunities facing Alberta’s construction sector and how collaboration across industry, labour and government is strengthening the skilled trades' capacity.

Participating in great discussions like these is key to getting the word out about the important role that Building Trades Unions play in building the future of Alberta's workforce. Thank you to all organizers and participants in this great forum!

BTA Executive Director, Terry Parker, was proud to join the Western Premiers' Conference last night to ensure Alberta's Building Trades members have a seat at the table on key decisions.

Great discussions with Premier Danielle Smith and her cabinet on workforce planning, apprenticeship training and ensuring the Albertans are first in line for the skilled trades opportunities that major projects create in the province.

The evening also provided a great opportunity to connect with great industry partners, including Warren Singh, Executive Director of the Alberta Construction Association, Terrance McKibbon, President & CEO of Bird Construction Inc., Terry Milot, Executive Vice President of Chemco and Ross Undershute, President of OpenCircle.
