In 1952, students in Dhaka, Bangladesh bravely fought for their right to speak their mother tongue. Their courage inspired UNESCO and the UN to establish International Mother Language Day in 2002 which celebrates linguistic and cultural diversity around the world. 🌐

Last week, Filipino Language and Culture School of Edmonton Society and HOY joined Edmonton’s 23rd annual celebration reminding us that language is more than communication. It carries our stories, our identity, and our traditions. Today and into the future, let’s celebrate and preserve our mother tongues. Speak it proudly. Teach it and let its legacy endure for future generations. 🙌🏽

What a night! 🙌🏽

We’re beyond excited to have helped welcome Philippine Ambassador Jose Victor Chan-Gonzaga for his first official visit to Alberta! 🇨🇦

Monday night was hosted in a very ✨ aesthetic ✨ venue with delicious food and an incredible turnout from Edmonton’s Filipino community. 🇵🇭 From local Filipino businesses serving up a delicious dinner to awesome conversations, it was a night to remember!

Big thanks to the Philippine Consulate General & Hon. Emma Sarne for inviting us and bringing everyone together! Maraming salamat! ♥️

Would you be able to handle freezing buckets of water for a good cause? 😬❄️ A huge salamat to Luis, JC, and Panjo for braving the chilly waters in our Bakit Bucket initiative — and raising an incredible $199.60! Living up to its name, we’re 99% sure EVERYONE was internally screaming “BAKIT?!” ("WHY?!") when that first icey bucket hit. 😂 Watch the video compilation in this post!

Our silent auction pulled in another $546, bringing the grand total to $745.60! 🎉💰

Half of these funds will cover food costs for our next cooking sesh at Ronald McDonald House Charities Alberta while the other half will benefit Multicultural Health Brokers Cooperative's Grocery Run program. Just like the legendary banak in the fiesta’s folklore that fed those in need, we're keeping that same energy — feeding those when they need it most. ❤️

What a fiesta! ✨ Maraming salamat to everyone who joined us and to our sponsors who brought the bayanihan spirit to life! From the delicious food, lively vibes, and action packed demo from Tien Lung Taekwon-Do—it was an event to remember! 🙌🏽

🚨 Announcing our third major silent auction item! Kindly donated by 805 Productions, up for grabs are two pairs of general admission tickets (total of 4) to Sweetnotes’ live concert in Edmonton! 🎤✨

Sweetnotes Music is a Filipino husband and wife duo who started performing in overseas hotels. It was during the pandemic when they truly struck a chord with Filipinos around the world. Their heartfelt livestream covers of beloved Filipino classics brought comfort and connection to thousands—including their rendition of “Iniibig Kita” which has racked up an astonishing 23 million views on YouTube! 🔥

Sweetnotes are now spreading their touching melodies across the globe in-person—and you can be part of it! Come down to Gold Bar Park this Saturday and place your bid! All funds raised go to great causes! 🎉

🎉 The countdown is ON — it’s one week until our 18th Annual Fiesta! 🎉

This year, we’re turning it up a notch with something totally brand new — a live taekwondo demo by the incredible Tien Lung Taekwon-Do Demo Team! Get ready for spectacular stunts, impressive board-breaking, and an action packed performance that’ll have you saying, “Grabe!” Tien Lung has also selected a HOY member for some exclusive training. If the 50/50 pot reaches $100, you might also see a special guest board break from them during the demo! 😮

Of course, that’s not all. We’re proud to put a spotlight on another community orientated non-profit that shares the same passion we do — empowering people and giving back to the community. 🙌🏽

If you’ve been to the community events along Edmonton’s 124th Street, you might’ve seen them in action along with many other local businesses in this corridor. From warming up the crowd at All Is Bright (an annual winter festival) with free hot chocolate and board-breaking lessons to wowing visitors at the 124 Grand Market with their performances. ✨

With their passion in helping youth grow with strength and confidence, we’re pumped to have them this year. Let’s give them the warmest mabuhay on July 26, 2025 at Gold Bar Park — you won’t want to miss this! 💥
