Project Adult Literacy Society

Project Adult Literacy Society Non-profit organization dedicated to changing lives through literacy. Literacy is having the skills to use printed material in daily living.

PALS is a community-based literacy program that addresses the learning needs of adults with low-level literacy skills. One in three adults in Edmonton does not have these skills. Math literacy is using math in daily living. One in two adults in Edmonton has low-level math skills. The strategy is volunteers work in a learning match with adults. The match builds on the prior learning of the adult st

udent, improves skills to meet the students goals, and builds capacity for the student. The adult students want to improve skills in reading, writing, comprehension, math, and/or language skills. Volunteers, from the community, are mentors and leaders in the PALS programs. Volunteers work with the adult students to meet their goals and set the direction for the programs. Volunteers are crucial partners in achieving the outcomes - the changes in the lives of the students.
