Community Options - A Society for Children and Families

Community Options - A Society for Children and Families Every child deserves a great start. Community Options is a Society that consists of five branches.

At Community Options, we provide quality childcare and inclusive developmental supports to children and their families within the greater Edmonton area. Community Options believes in offering children and families an inclusive experience to develop their full potential within in their community, regardless of their abilities, while positively impacting lifelong learning and enriching quality of li

fe. For over 40 years, we have provided services in the Edmonton and surrounding area, and we truly believe that the programs we provide positively impact the future of the children and their families. Each works toward supporting the diverse needs of children and families through inclusive early childhood education and community initiatives. These branches are: our Early Learning and Childcare Centre, Out of School Care, Preschool, Family and Community Support and Community Preschool Education Program, we make a positive impact on over 280 families. The largest branch within our society is our Community Preschool Education Program, which is currently supporting 180 children and families, within Edmonton and surrounding area. Using a multi-disciplinary team, the aim of our Community Preschool Education Program, is to promote maximum skill development of children with diagnosed special needs, within their community setting, whether it be a preschool or a daycare of the parent’s choosing. Community Options also believes in giving back to the community. Our community initiatives, such as our Annual Festive Meal, neighborhood table, free family movie nights, and free tax preparation clinics for low income families within the Inglewood community, help build on our belief that strong communities build strong families. With parent and community involvement, the Society ensures that its programs are responding to the unique needs and circumstances of our children and families by providing flexible and meaningful services.

Helping a child with apraxia requires specialized SLP support. Unlike traditional speech sound treatment, motor speech disorders like apraxia mean that we:

✅ Focus on movement - not individual sounds
✅ Choose target words that are meaningful to the child
✅ Work on the smoothness and melody of speech (prosody)
✅ Practice a small set of words intensively - sometimes up to 100 times in a session!

At Community Options, we developed The Apraxia Preschool Program (TAPP) so that Edmonton-area preschoolers would have access to the SLP services they need, at no cost to their families.

Apraxia can impact more than just clarity of speech. Children with this diagnosis are also at higher risk of challenges related to literacy (reading and writing). 📚

Some ways that we can support preschoolers to develop their pre-literacy skills include:

✨ Reading together
✨ Talking about rhyming words
✨ Clapping out the syllables in longer words
✨ Pointing out letters and print in the environment
✨ Visiting your local library

Swipe through to see some of the ways that our children have been working on their pre-literacy skills at The Apraxia Preschool Program (TAPP).

Today is Apraxia Awareness Day! At TAPP, we celebrated by wearing blue, and we explored the many ways that our TAPP children like to use their voices!
For a child with Apraxia, forming clear speech can be extremely challenging. It’s why we celebrate every word, sound, gesture and more – because at Community Options we know that every child deserves the right to be heard.

Did you know?
-Childhood Apraxia of Speech effects approximately 1-2 out of 1,000 children
-It is a movement disorder, and different than a "speech delay"
-Early, specialized SLP intervention is crucial
-With access to the right supports, children can make wonderful gains!

May is Apraxia Awareness Month 💙
Join us as we celebrate individuals with Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS), share their stories, and highlight the importance of early support for children and families.
We're excited to showcase The Apraxia Preschool Program (TAPP), a classroom-based PUF program, and the ways we help children with apraxia to grow, learn and thrive in an inclusive environment.

Stay tuned all month long - and help us spread awareness.
