How DrugBank went from a university research project to a global platform

At last week, we sponsored the Startups theme to spotlight a company building globally relevant technology from Edmonton. That conversation focused on DrugBank, a company that started as a University of Alberta research project and evolved into a globally trusted platform used across pharmaceutical research and drug discovery.

The panel featured Mike Wilson, Co-founder & CPO, Drugbank, Shay Barker, Director, People, Drugbank, Jacob Grainger, Associate, Pender Ventures, and moderator Arden Tse, Principal, Yaletown Partners, who unpacked the realities of scaling: evolving customer needs, organizational growth, commercialization, hiring through ambiguity, and building long-term from Edmonton.

What emerged wasn’t a story about one breakthrough moment or dramatic pivot. It was a conversation about continuous adaptation while staying connected to the original problem worth solving.

Last week, we brought together founders, operators, researchers and industry leaders for a conversation focused on HardTech, AI and the future of the built world.

Because while AI conversations often focus on software, some of the most important innovation happening right now is taking place inside industrial systems, infrastructure, energy and advanced manufacturing.

From commercialization and manufacturing realities to industry adoption and scaling physical technologies, the discussion surfaced a recurring theme: breakthrough technology only matters if it can solve real-world operational problems.

Huge thanks to Ji Ke (SOSV HAX), Tom de Haas (Interface Fluidics) and Ryan Tucker (G2V Optics Inc.) for an incredibly honest conversation about what it actually takes to build and scale HardTech companies.

Edmonton’s HardTech ecosystem continues to evolve quickly and conversations like this are helping strengthen the connections between founders, industry, researchers and investors needed to move innovation forward.

What is deep tech?

It’s technology built on breakthrough science or engineering, not just software or incremental innovation. What makes these companies different is that their value comes from the technology itself, making them much harder to replicate. And Edmonton is entering a new era of it.

Join us for a morning featuring two conversations with leaders from across Canada’s innovation ecosystem on what it takes to build and grow deep tech companies.

The event includes:
👉 A panel discussion with leading Canadian investors: Aditya Aggarwal, Managing Partner, Industrial Innovation, Venture Fund, BDC, Ricky Mehra, General Partner, Continuum Health Ventures, Amit Monga, President, EECONMOBILITY, Neha Khera, Managing Partner IRV Fund, Innovobot Patrick Lor, Managing Partner, Panache Ventures, & Scott Pelton, Co-Founder, RiSC Capital on what sets successful deep tech companies apart
👉 A fireside chat moderated by Arden Tse, Principal Yaletown Partners with Wyvern founders Chris Robson and Callie Lissinna on building a company in Edmonton
👉 Networking opportunities with founders, investors, researchers, operators, and students

The conversations will explore commercialization, funding, partnerships, hiring, and the realities of building technical companies from Alberta.

Whether you’re building a company, commercializing research, investing in innovation, or simply interested in where Edmonton’s tech ecosystem is heading, we hope you’ll join us.

Community Coffee Recap ☕

Yesterday’s Community Coffee Takeover was a full house!

We kicked things off with a founder pitch from Jessica Haire, founder of Connection Awaits, before hearing from the Government of Canada’s Trade Commissioner Service about the Canadian Technology Accelerator (CTA) Program.

Luis Ernesto from TCS Mexico shared insights on international expansion and how the CTA program can help founders accelerate their path into global markets.

We also heard from Myrna Bittner, Founder of RWI Synthetics, who shared her firsthand experience with the CTA program and what it meant for her company’s growth.

A big thank you to the Trade Commissioner Service, Luis Ernesto, Myrna Bittner, and everyone who contributed to this week’s takeover. The conversations were insightful, the networking was energizing, and the treats were delicious.

And thank you to everyone who joined us, including Mayor Andrew Knack, who made a surprise appearance!

Next week, the Canadian Intellectual Property Office is taking over Community Coffee. Join us: LINK IN BIO
