Launch Party Alumni: Where Are They Now?

Last year, CARM&A took the Launch Party stage.

Since then, founders Marjan Abbasi & Sheny Khera continued building their platform while gaining traction across Alberta’s healthcare innovation ecosystem. Recent milestones include winning the inaugural Alberta College of Family Physicians Family Medicine Innovation Forum pitch competition, presenting at the ACFP Family Medicine Summit, and building new partnerships with physicians, healthcare leaders, and innovators across the province.

It’s always exciting to see where companies go after Launch Party.

How early should life sciences founders be thinking about IP?

Earlier than most.

For life sciences companies, intellectual property isn’t a back-office consideration. It’s often the foundation of your competitive advantage, a key factor in fundraising, and a critical part of your path to commercialization.

Join Dentons lawyers Jaclin Cassios, Counsel, and Heather Barnhouse, Partner, for a practical workshop on protecting innovation, navigating regulatory considerations, and making informed decisions that can strengthen your company’s long-term position.

If you’re building in life sciences, this session is worth adding to your calendar.

What happens when municipal leaders, founders, and innovation builders get into the same room?

Great conversations.

During the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) Conference, Edmonton Unlimited welcomed delegates for a Study Tour focused on Edmonton’s tech and innovation ecosystem. What started as a tour of our space quickly evolved into meaningful discussions about entrepreneurship, commercialization, intellectual property, research, and what it takes to build and scale innovative companies in Canada.

A special thank you to Zack Storms for moderating the founder panel and to Lelia Lawson (Zylotex), Kyle Scheuer (Ultracoustics), and Tanay Kumar, PhD (Aqtiva Inc.) for sharing their experiences and insights.

The best part? The conversations didn’t stop when the panel ended. Delegates stayed to ask questions, make connections, and learn more about the people, programs, and partnerships helping shape Edmonton’s innovation ecosystem.

That’s exactly what these Study Tours are designed to do.

Last Friday, we welcomed founders, advisors, and ecosystem leaders to the ScaleUP Breakfast Social, hosted in partnership with ScaleUP Alberta and MNP.

The morning was an opportunity to connect, celebrate, and recognize this year’s ScaleUP Award finalists!

One of the highlights was hearing from Ian Gladue, who shared the story behind Mitsoh. What they’ve built is a testament to resilience, purpose, and staying true to their roots while scaling nationally. From revitalizing traditional Indigenous foods to selling millions of units, their journey is an inspiring example of growth with impact.

Most of all, it was great to see a room full of people who are committed to building and growing companies in our region. That kind of energy is what makes Edmonton’s innovation community so special.

Thank you to ScaleUP Alberta, MNP, Mitsoh, and everyone who joined us for the morning.

Congratulations again to all of the ScaleUP Award finalists—we can’t wait to see what’s next.

What makes a deep tech company investable?

It’s probably not what most founders think.

At yesterday’s Deep Tech Showcase, moderated by Amit Monga, the conversation featured Aditya Aggarwal from BDC Capital’s Industrial Innovation Venture Fund, Neha Khera from Innovobot and IRV Fund, Pat Lor from Panache Ventures, Ricky Mehra from Continuum Health Ventures, and Scott Pelton from Risc Capital.

The panel covered everything from commercialization and capital efficiency to founder readiness and competitive advantage.

One theme came through loud and clear: Great technology alone isn’t enough.

Investors want to understand the problem you’re solving, the market opportunity, your path to commercialization, and whether your team can execute through uncertainty.

We captured some of the key insights from the discussion in our latest article: Beyond the Technology: What Makes a Deep Tech Company Investable

Whether you’re building in AI, health innovation, advanced manufacturing, energy, space, or another deep tech sector, these lessons are worth a read.
