Had enough time to digest all that Thanksgiving food?

Because we’ve got one more food-related highlight from Edmonton Startup Week to share!

Our YEG Food Founders Showcase gave us a taste of what local entrepreneurs are cooking up, from new products and fresh ideas to what it actually takes to build a successful food business.

Peter Keith, Jacqueline Jacek and Greg Zeschuk brought their experience to the table for a conversation about turning a great food idea into a successful company. Because making something delicious is one thing. Building a business around it? That’s a whole different recipe.

And of course, it wouldn’t be Edmonton Startup Week without a few pitches!

Fourteen food founders took the stage to show us what they’re building, and they delivered! From chocolates and snacks to mocktails, salsa and everything in between, there was plenty to get excited about. And getting to sample some of those products? Even better.

A big shoutout to Token Mocktails, Compass Chocolates, 7 Summits Snacks, 529 Hard Protein Seltzer, Don’ya, Gummy Nutrition Lab, BRiiNE, Blush Cake Bar, Red House Salsa, Super Amigos Mexican Street Food, figorar, Zwick’s Pretzels, Flat Out Feasts and bevada Beverages Inc.

Day 2 brought the energy.

Yesterday, Edmonton Startup Week moved from early-morning conversations about new opportunities in defence to founder stories, venture pilots, packed rooms and a Startup Crawl across the south side.

We kicked things off at Community Coffee, where the conversation focused on defence, procurement and the opportunities emerging for Edmonton companies looking to understand and access this growing market.

From there, the MIT REAP Edmonton team shared an important update. After two years of learning, exploring and digging into Edmonton’s innovation ecosystem, we heard more about how those insights are now moving into action.

Then came the Built World Showcase — an afternoon of moving through pilot stations, meeting the ventures behind them and seeing firsthand how real-world pilots are progressing.

And somehow, that was all before Tuesday night.

Three events. Three very different experiences. Three packed rooms.

At The NO BS Revenue Conversation, Shubh Sidhu and Shawn Martens skipped the polished founder answers and got into the realities of building companies, finding revenue and everything that comes with it.

At the Rice Theater in the beautiful Citadel, Women in Tech & Innovation, presented by Alberta Blue Cross, brought together a packed room for Courageous Ambition — an honest conversation about adversity, growth, change and sustaining performance when the pressure is high.

A huge thank you to Melanie Fuller, Sam Horvath, Sophie Gray and Jolene Ali for bringing so much perspective to the stage, and to Tara McCarthy for guiding the conversation.

Startup Crawl: South Tour started with a little friendly trivia before heading to G2V Optics for a behind-the-scenes look at the company and the work happening there — a chance to get out into the community and experience another part of Edmonton’s startup ecosystem.

The room was full, the conversations were already flowing, and our Top 10 Companies to Watch took to the MNP Pitch Stage to share what they’re building and where they’re headed.

Ten founders. Ten pitches. And a strong reminder of just how much is happening in Edmonton’s tech and innovation community.

Community Coffee Recap: Startup Week Edition

This morning’s Community Coffee Takeover put the spotlight on a growing opportunity for businesses across Western Canada: defence procurement.

A big thank you to Sean Naugle, Senior Contracts Officer at CFB Edmonton, for joining us and sharing his insight into what it takes to do business with the defence sector. With more than 30 years of experience with the Department of National Defence, Sean gave the community a closer look at where procurement opportunities are emerging, how businesses can navigate the landscape, and some of the challenges that can stand in the way.

Of course, the conversation was paired with what Community Coffee does best, good coffee, new connections, and plenty of conversation.

And we’re keeping it going all week! Community Coffee is happening at 8 AM every morning for the rest of Edmonton Startup Week, with a different community-led takeover each day.

That’s one of the questions MIT REAP Team Edmonton has spent the past two years working through. During Edmonton Startup Week, they’re sharing where that work has landed and what comes next.

This is a chance to get inside the thinking: what the team heard from across the city, which priorities rose to the top, and where they see opportunities to turn those insights into action.

At the centre of that work is a big challenge: how do we get more organizations bringing forward real business problems they’re willing to pay to solve, creating more opportunities for local companies to move from pitches to purchases?
