John Howard Society of Alberta

John Howard Society of Alberta Effective, just and humane responses to the causes and consequences of crime.

The John Howard Society of Alberta is a non-profit agency concerned with the problem of crime and its prevention. The organization takes its name and spirit from the 18th century humanitarian John Howard, whose name has become a symbol of humane consideration for prisoners. It was incorporated in 1949, and today the organization consists of six separately incorporated districts along with the Prov

incial Office. We believe that crime control is as much the responsibility of the community as it is of government. Through involvement with the John Howard Society, as members or volunteers, people in the community play an active role in the criminal justice process by providing programs for offenders and their families, ex-offenders, young persons and the public.

Informative article. “The Youth Criminal Justice Act: What can journalists publish, and who does it protect?“

When police announce that a violent crime has been committed, people want to know who was hurt and who was charged. However, when those involved are under the age of 18, the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA) limits what journalists can report. A recent high-profile example in Saskatoon is the case o...

At Cold Lake John Howard Society, we believe in creating a community where everyone has access to a safe and stable place to call home. We’re proud to support the Pushing For Change event in Bonnyville, an incredible event raising awareness about homelessness and working to destigmatize the challenges many face. This conversation is a very important one for our community to have.

More from CJHS:

“On March 12, 2015, our community experienced an immense loss with the passing of Keegan James Kostiuk—a vibrant, compassionate, and fun-loving young man.
“To honour and always remember Keegan, the Keegan HELP fund was created. The KHF has been a beacon of hope, empowering hundreds of young individuals to pursue their dreams. Over the past three years alone, the KHF has distributed $24,194 to support 60 applications—transforming lives by funding education programs, driving lessons, first aid training, recreation activities, and more. These opportunities help youth build confidence, form connections, and create brighter futures.
“Every dollar you give goes toward empowering young people to reach their full potential. Together, we can honor Keegan’s memory by investing in the dreams and futures of our community’s youth.”

From SK: “The law regarding the standard of proof required to find a provincial inmate guilty of a disciplinary offence changed Friday [March 15]. The Supreme Court of Canada (SCC) ruled that a standard of proof beyond a reasonable doubt — the same standard used in criminal trials — must be used in inmate disciplinary hearings in provincial correctional facilities when a finding of guilt could result in certain punishments like segregation or loss of earned remission (early release).”

When punishment includes loss of liberty for an inmate, a higher standard of proof must be used to find them guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Supreme Court of Canada has ruled.

From the US: “Muhammad’s unlikely elevation came during a remarkable — if largely overlooked — era in the history of America’s juvenile justice system. Between 2000 and 2020, the number of young people incarcerated in the United States declined by an astonishing 77 percent.”

Lessons from a radical 20-year experiment and a quiet triumph of public policy.
