Amanda served on our Board from 2018 to 2023, bringing thoughtful leadership, deep compassion, and genuine care for lung health in Alberta. Those who worked alongside her knew her as someone who showed up fully, whether in the boardroom, on a race course, or thousands of feet in the air.

We extend our deepest condolences to her husband, Paul, her family, friends, and everyone whose life she touched.

In a gesture that speaks to the kind of person Amanda was, her family has invited memorial donations to Alberta Lung. We are honoured and deeply grateful. Here is the link to donate: http://ablung.ca/donate

Amanda, thank you for everything you gave to this work. Your impact on lung health in Alberta will not be forgotten.

Asthma affects millions of Canadians every day, including nearly 10% of Albertans. It is one of the most common respiratory illnesses in the country, yet many people still face barriers to care due to long wait times, overloaded healthcare systems, and rising costs.

Asthma attacks can escalate quickly and are not always predictable. Recognizing the signs early and responding fast can make all the difference.

The impact reaches far beyond the individual. Asthma costs Canada more than $2.1 billion each year through hospital visits, medication, and missed days at school and work, with those costs expected to double by 2030.

This Asthma Awareness Month, Alberta Lung is helping raise awareness of the realities of asthma in Canada and the importance of education, support, and access to care.

Join us this May as we .

What’s really in the air inside our homes, and how does it affect children living with asthma?

The A-OK study is exploring how home air quality may influence asthma symptoms, sleep, and overall health in children and youth. Researchers are examining airborne chemicals, how they enter the body, and whether HEPA filtration can help improve outcomes.

This pilot study also supports a deeper understanding of asthma care and helps guide future research focused on cleaner indoor air and better health for kids.

Children ages 5–17 with asthma that is not well controlled may be eligible.

Because every child deserves the chance to breathe easier.

We’re proud to recognize Trudell Medical for supporting Alberta Lung’s Spacer Program and helping families in need access the respiratory equipment their children need most.

These donations help ensure children with asthma can safely manage their condition at home, stay healthier, and spend less time in the hospital.

“My family and I would like to thank you and thank all the donors for the AeroChamber we got for our son… his inhaler is a lifeline and the spacer makes it affordable.”

This is the real impact of community support.

Thank you to Trudell Medical for helping us provide life-changing care, one breath at a time.

There’s nothing quite like that first long weekend after a long Alberta winter.

With Victoria Day here, it’s the perfect time to step outside, take a deep breath, and enjoy some fresh air. Go for a walk, hit the trails, or spend a few quiet minutes outside. Your lungs will thank you!

Here’s to a season of fresh starts and easier breathing.

Asthma has been part of Christy’s life since she was just 18 months old. Growing up meant hospital visits, learning triggers, and figuring out how to keep moving forward even when breathing felt difficult.

But her story is also one of resilience.

She remembers Saturday mornings at the YMCA where her parents attended asthma education sessions while she spent time swimming and playing in the gym. Those experiences helped build confidence and showed her that asthma did not have to stop her from living an active life.

By elementary and middle school, Christy became a runner and competed in races, often placing well. Running strengthened her lungs and helped her realize that asthma did not define what she was capable of.

Even now, asthma can still bring moments of fear and uncertainty. Managing it takes awareness, support, and understanding what works for her. Through it all, Christy remains grateful for the healthcare professionals who continue to help keep her well.

By sharing her story, she hopes others understand that asthma is manageable, but very real in how it can affect everyday life. Education, awareness, and support can make a meaningful difference.

Compassion, expertise, and care make all the difference, and nurses bring all three every single day.

Nurses play an essential role in supporting Albertans through every stage of their health journey, including those living with lung disease and respiratory illness. Their dedication helps patients feel cared for, informed, and empowered when they need it most.

During National Nursing Week, we’re recognizing and celebrating the nurses whose hard work strengthens healthcare and improves lives across our province.

Thank you for all that you do! 💙

Mother’s Day looks different for every family.

For some, it means long days in the NICU, learning medical terms you never expected to hear, and holding onto hope through every breath.

When Hunter was born, his mom faced uncertainty from the very first moments. Through it all, she stood by his side, navigating every challenge, every milestone, and every step forward.

With support from the Alberta Lung Association, Hunter was able to go home with the equipment he needed to breathe safely, giving his family something every parent hopes for: more time together.

This Mother’s Day, we recognize the strength, resilience, and love of moms who show up in the hardest moments.

Because sometimes, love sounds like steady breathing.
