Today, October 4, is Sisters in Spirit Day. We honour the lives of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQIA+ people, along with their families, loved ones, and communities.
The Sisters in Spirit initiative began in 2004, led by the Native Women's Association of Canada (NWAC). Through research, education, and advocacy, the initiative brought greater attention to the systemic violence experienced by Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQIA+ people. Since 2006, annual October 4 Sisters in Spirit Vigils have been held across Canada. These gatherings bring families, communities, and allies together to honour loved ones, support one another, raise awareness, and stand in solidarity.
You can show your support today by:
🔸Taking a moment of silence to remember the victims and their loved ones
🔸Lighting a candle in your window
🔸Sharing words of remembrance using and
🔸Joining an event in your community
