Edmonton New Technology Society - ENTS

Edmonton New Technology Society - ENTS ENTS is Edmonton's very own Makerspace. To arrange a tour, send us a message, or email to [email protected] What is ENTS? What does ENTS do? How does ENTS work?

The Edmonton New Technology Society (ENTS) is a non-profit, member-driven organization of technology enthusiasts. ENTS offers members a place to create, build, repair and otherwise work on projects our members might have. We held our first meeting in August of 2009 and have been improving and building on our space ever since. Now in our sixth year we've grown to be a self-sustaining organization o

f like minded technology enthusiasts. ENTS provides members with 24/7 access to fully equipped; electronics lab, wood shop, metal shop, meeting and tinkering facilities, stocked with a variety of tools and supplies. See The Space for more information. ENTS Members pay monthly dues which are used towards our operating costs. With the dues collected ENTS is able to provide the workspace and the supplies for our members to work. As a registered non-profit society in the province of Alberta, ENTS is organized under and governed by a set of bylaws and policies, ratified by the membership. The currently active version of these documents can be viewed at docum.ENTS.ca.

A member brought in their new xTool F2 laser for special projects this evening. This was just a material test getting ready for projects. This is a combo unit that has both an IR and Diode modules.

IR lasers can engrave and etch metal. Should ENTS consider a permanent laser like this for the studio?

Drill Bit Sorting Day!!!

It's not exciting as a project, but it's nice to have done. The endless incomplete bit sets have found themselves into overflow bins.
Next up will be resharpening these bits. Or

Of the hundreds of bits we sorted this evening, only 7 were metric bits.

These boring jobs pay off when you no longer need rummage through a drawer looking for the right bit.

After a few weeks on back order, our latest glaze shipment has arrived. ENTS members have access to nearly 200 varieties of glaze!

Members contribute glaze as they use it, but the library allows for immense variety without each member needing to purchase full libraries. Sometimes you just need an accent here or there and our glaze library allows for massive creativity!

Our kilns are loaded and fired an average of 4 times a week. This has pieces moving through the studio at a good pace and members rarely wait for pieces to be fired.
Volunteers try and photograph the kiln layers as we load/unload and post to our chat room. It's a fun feature to know when your pieces are loaded and when they're done.
Book a tour with us on Tuesday evenings to visit our pottery studio!

A few weeks back we asked what we should do for our next studio and there was a lot of interest in stained glass.
We're excited to share that we've got the basics of the studio up already with more on the way.
It's not every day we get to open a new studio, but already members are in and working on projects! We'll keep sharing updates as we grow.

Are you already a glass artist but needing somewhere to work? Have you always wanted to try? Book a tour with us and discover everything that ENTS offers!

One of the best things of our shop is collaborating between the hobbies. We made custom extrusion dies for our clay extruder to quickly make test tiles and stands! With an old numbering stamp we were able to serialize the test tiles which was hugely valuable when testing our dip glaze recipes.

You can see the iterative design of the extrusion dies, too. The goal was to make a stable test tile with the least amount of clay possible.

We're bringing more 3D printing into the shop. These new dust collector adapters are super easy to switch between tools.
The magnets offer enough hold that the hose stays put, but break free with a twist.

We have plans for more functional prints coming for the shop in the new year!

When you're working with big boards, small tools just won't do. Our wood shop is equipped with an 8" jointer and a 20" planner. Making short work of milling lumber.
