Get to know our Community Assistant, Preston Codrington (spoiler: he's awesome!).

We recently welcomed Preston to the team as our part-time Community Assistant.

Preston has a strong tennis background, having played competitive junior tennis out of Edmonton. He served as Head Tennis Professional at Broadmoor Tennis Club and as Tennis Alberta’s Head Roadshow Coach. He coached this summer at the Alberta Summer Games and has been a big asset to our community programs, including traveling to support rural communities.

Equally impressive in the world of academia, Preston is studying Biology at Western University in Ontario and has worked as a Biochemistry Laboratory Assistant within the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, contributing to valuable biomedical research.

We caught up with Preston for a quick Q&A to help our tennis community get to know the newest member of the Tennis Alberta team.

Weewooweewoo - that's the sound of the Cool Job Alert system 🚨

Yes, that's right. We're looking for someone in the Edmonton area to join our team in a full-time, hybrid role (with WFH flexibility).

The Coordinator, Programs will coordinate the delivery and administration of Tennis Alberta’s community, grassroots, and coaching development programs to help us grow and develop the sport and engage new participants.

This role reports directly to our Manager, Community Development, and offers a great entry point into the sports sector for someone eager to learn, grow, and make an impact.

Thank you, Mary (we'll miss you)!

With a mixture of sadness, pride, excitement, and gratitude, we say farewell to Mary Potter, who is leaving her post at Tennis Alberta for another exciting opportunity in the Edmonton area.

Since joining the team in 2024, Mary has made an incredible, indelible impact across our communities. From coordinating the Tennis Alberta Roadshow, Women & W**e events, and the Candy Cane Classic, to coaching and championing the return of wheelchair tennis to the Alberta Open, her dedication to our community has been felt everywhere.

And all the while, she kicked butt at Masters tournaments.

Thank you, Mary, for all your hard work, leadership, and passion for the sport.

All the best in your next chapter, and we look forward to seeing you on the courts (friendly matches only, please!).

Zimo Xiang, National Champion 🏆

Fun fact first: Zimo played up a week earlier at U16 Nationals in Toronto, reaching the quarterfinals and pushing the No. 1 seed (and eventual winner) in a close match.

The following week, she was off to Laval to compete against her peers, and she was outstanding all tournament. Even though she was unseeded, Zimo played like the tournament favourite. Cruising through match after match against the country’s best, she capped off her dominant run with a 6-0, 6-3 victory in the final.

Ezekiel Cheruvallath—remember the name!

It was a huge Nationals campaign for Ezekiel, who had a challenging route all tournament.

Ezekiel battled his way into the Championship Flight, surviving a three-set test against a top seed just to make it there. He kept on winning, toppling the No. 4 seed in the Round of 16 and the No. 2 seed in the semifinals. And though he fell to BC’s Liam Suh in the final, it was a standout week of tennis.

Way to go, Ezekiel!

Late but great official congratulations to Zoe Mao, who is a National Champion 🏆

And she got it done in dominant fashion.

Zoe cruised through her preliminary matches and entered the Championship Flight as the No. 1 seed. And against the country’s top competition, she didn’t miss a beat. A 3-6, 3-6 scoreline was the closest any opponent came to stopping her all week. Zoe clinched the national title in style, defeating her Ontario opponent 6-2, 6-1 in the final.
