This Thanksgiving Day, we're grateful for the students, staff, families and community members who attend and support Public Schools. Many of these individuals are the trustees on your Public School Boards today—whether they went to a Public School, taught in a classroom or took part in a school council.

Thank you for everything you do to enhance student success.

A child who feels safe enough to speak up. An adult who knows how to listen. A community that learns prevention is not a program. It's a culture.

October is , a time to raise awareness about child abuse and neglect in Canada and to affirm our collective responsibility to protect children.

The supports Public School Boards in enhancing student well-being at their school divisions. This last May, the Association had Kevin Cameron, the Executive Director of the Center for Trauma Informed Practices, present to trustees from across the province about Violence Threat Risk Assessment and trauma-informed approaches. This last August, the Association offered a session from the Northern Alberta Internet Child Exploitation Unit to its member representatives about the dangers of child exploitation and sextortion.

The PSBAA will continue to offer valuable and timely professional development opportunities to support safe learning and working environments at Public Schools.

A kitchen filled with the smell of something slow-cooked and deeply loved. A dance that carries centuries of history in every step. A classroom where Spanish is spoken with pride.

October is in Canada—a time to honour the rich cultural and historical contributions of individuals with Latin American heritage.

The values at the heart of many Latin American cultures—family, community, resilience and joy—are the same values that guide Public School Trustees as they make decisions for the students and families they serve. When trustees attend school council meetings, visit classrooms and take part in school division engagement events, these activities strengthen their decision-making and ensure they reflect the voices of their communities.

It's all falling into place this October! We're excited to welcome representatives from our member Public School Boards, education partners, sponsors and other invited guests to our fall event.

Our Lieutenant Governor Lois E. Hole Dinner and Lecture takes place on Wednesday, October 14. We are pleased to have Dylan Bressey, President of Alberta Municipalities, as our keynote speaker. We'll also collect donations for the Lois Hole Hospital for Women in honour of the life and legacy of Lieutenant Governor and Public School Trustee Lois E. Hole.

Our Professional Development Sessions happen on Thursday, October 15. Dr. Greg Wells, a Human Physiologist dedicated to peak performance, and Jody Urquhart, a Motivational Speaker that uses humour to empower, will present to attendees.

Our Annual General Meeting will commence on Friday, October 16. Representatives from member boards will discuss topics important to Public School education, vote on candidates for the Board of Directors and so much more.

The Public School student population in Alberta is growing.

From the 2020-21 school year to the 2024-25 school year, there has been an increase of 56,133 Public School students in the student population of our province. The average increase from year-to-year has been close to 14,000 students.

However, it's important to note enrolment pressures look different in Public Schools based upon their geographic context.

For many Public Schools in urban centres, the student population is increasing. This can mean larger class sizes and less classroom spaces.

For many rural Public Schools, the student population is decreasing. This can mean split-grade classes and potential school closures.

Public School Boards are focused on enhancing student success and well-being. School divisions monitor their student population, adding school projects to their capital plans, adjusting school attendance boundaries and seeing where modular classrooms are needed.

But this work isn't done in isolation. The provincial government, municipalities and other community organizations and stakeholders must collaborate to ensure every student has the best quality education they can in Public Schools.

A whiteboard covered in ideas before the first student arrives. A hallway conversation that turns a hard day around. A profession that shapes every other profession.

Teachers don't just teach subjects. They teach people.

Today is , observed every October 5 to honour educators around the world and the vital role they play in building strong, equitable societies.

On behalf of the , we say thank you to all Public School teachers—not just for what you teach, but for who you are to the students in your care. We encourage everyone to reflect on the teachers that made an impact on who you are today and to show your appreciation for the ones making that same difference in classrooms right now.

Today is Sisters in Spirit Day—a time to honour the lives of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and Two-Spirit and gender-diverse people (MMIWG2S+), their families, loved ones and communities.

Reflect on those we've lost, light a candle in your window and consider attending a vigil in your community.

Throughout the year, Public School Trustees from across the province take part in events to raise awareness about MMIWG2S+, such as Sisters in Spirit Day and Red Dress Day.

It's this October. For Public School students with dyslexia, they may face challenges in spelling and writing in addition to reading difficulties.

Public School Boards support literacy growth for every student. That's why specialized supports and accommodations are in place to help students with dyslexia achieve their academic potential.
