Women Building Futures

Women Building Futures We support women’s economic security through employment training and support services. We are a non-profit organization based in Edmonton, Alberta.

We offer programs and support services to help unemployed and underemployed women explore and connect to careers that pay above a living wage. Careers that not only support their own security but often that of their children. We primarily work with women who are underemployed or unemployed and focus on removing common barriers to financial independence. These barriers include access to affordable

housing, academic readiness, access to affordable childcare and more. Over the last 20 years, we’ve grown to become a trusted name in our focus industries for introductory training and inspiring more women to explore career opportunities in these areas.

Hard hats on. Early mornings. Massive projects taking shape.

Last week, our J2T 124 cohort stepped inside Waiward Industrial’s fabrication shop; seeing firsth and how major projects like Edmonton’s new LRT line come to life.

From classroom concepts to the realities of the worksite, the day offered more than a tour. It was a glimpse into the rhythm of the trade; shift schedules, team dynamics, and the kind of dedication it takes (including 4:00 a.m. starts!).

Moments like these bridge learning and lived experience, helping our students picture themselves in the industry and step confidently toward their careers.

A big thank you to Waiward for opening your doors and sharing your work with the next generation of skilled trades professionals! 👏🛠️

There’s nothing better than learning on real equipment! 💪

A huge thank you to Bosch Truck International for loaning their truck to our Heavy Duty Equipment Technician program.

For the past two weeks, our Heavy Duty Equipment Technician students got up close and personal with this beauty — exploring every detail hands-on.

Safe to say… they’ve officially kicked the tires and checked it out! ✅🚛

Today is the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia & Biphobia (IDAHOBIT).

At Women Building Futures, inclusivity isn’t optional; it’s a core value. Building a stronger trades workforce means creating spaces where 2SLGBTQ+ people are respected, supported, and able to thrive.

We’re proud to stand alongside industry partners like DiversiTrade Resource & Connection Centre and their Pride in Construction 2026 – Community Engagement Event at SAIT Polytechnic in Calgary, helping advance equity, visibility, and belonging across the skilled trades.

Because the future of construction is safer, stronger, and more innovative when everyone belongs. 🏳️‍🌈🛠️

👏🎓 Congratulations to our newest Journey to Trades (122) Calgary (YYC) graduates

Over the past three months, this group explored multiple trades, earned safety certifications, built hands-on skills, and stepped into entirely new possibilities, many for the very first time.

Some came in with no experience in the trades whatsoever.
Some were navigating unemployment, career changes, or uncertainty about what came next.

But all of them showed up ready to try.

And as they reminded us: “It’s okay not to get it the first time… let’s try it again.”
That mindset is what carried this cohort forward, through every challenge, every new skill, and every moment of growth.

We watched them build confidence, support each other, and discover what happens when “you’ve got good people by your side.”
We saw them take chances on themselves, commit fully, and realize that they are more capable than they ever imagined.

And along the way, they didn’t just gain technical skills, they gained direction, purpose, and the belief that they can keep growing, keep challenging themselves, and build careers that are anything but ordinary.
And now, they’re stepping into the trades with more than certifications; they’re stepping in with confidence, community, and the drive to succeed. 💛

A huge thank you to our incredible instructors and partners who helped guide, support, and uplift this cohort every step of the way.

🎓 To our newest WBF alumni:

Graduation isn’t the end of the journey; it’s just the beginning.
The Women Building Futures community is here to support you before, during, and long after your time in the program.

Keep asking questions.
Keep learning.
Keep taking up space.

And keep showing up for yourselves and for each other.

We can’t wait to see where you go next. 👏

Journey to Trades is now accepting applications for Edmonton.

Yesterday, Women Building Futures External Relations and Development had the opportunity to use RAM Elevators & Lifts’ training centre for our planning day. We’re grateful for the warm hospitality, the behind‑the‑scenes tour of their facilities, and the chance to learn more about the innovative work happening at RAM. Thank you to the entire team for hosting us so generously!

Steel‑toed boots at the door, notebooks open, and ideas bouncing across the room, we spent the day mapping what’s next in a space where training meets real‑world application. Walking through the shop floor, pausing at the equipment, and seeing instruction in action brought our conversations into sharper focus.

Plans feel different when they’re built alongside the environments our participants step into, where skills are practiced, confidence is built, and careers begin.

Grateful to be in rooms and on shop floors like this.
