With phenomenal headliners including a highly respected Toronto documentarian, to one of the world’s top Documentary commentators with over 5 Million followers, to a Vancouver-based Ethical Storytelling Practices Consultant, “Building Your Audience” is set to give any experience level of producer or crew a terrific day of inspiration, information, and engagement. It’s one you won’t want to miss.

DOC Alberta's in-person “Building Your Audience” workshops are coming to Calgary and Edmonton this June, bringing together a large party of our creative storytelling community including documentary filmmakers, industry professionals, festivals directors, and audience development experts, for a full-day professional development and discussion event. We even have lunch to fuel you.

We have three incredible talents to announce headlining the program:

Min Sook Lee, one of Canada's most acclaimed documentary filmmakers, will join DOC Alberta Board Chair Kelly Wolfert for a special “Conversation With...” session. Drawing on decades of experience creating award-winning documentaries, Min Sook will share insights from her filmmaking career and discuss the evolving landscape of documentary storytelling as well as how she preps and executes to reach her film’s core audience.

Christie Boschman, known online as “”, has built a global community of more than 5.2 million documentary enthusiasts. As part of our Marketing for Documentary Films panel, Christie will discuss her passion for sharing documentaries, her own audience development, strategic partnerships in online engagement, and how filmmakers are connecting their work with viewers in today's social media environment.

Larissa Maxwell, an ethical storytelling consultant, researcher, and therapist, will lead “Documenting with Care: Challenges and Emerging Practices in Ethical Storytelling”, exploring practical approaches to consent, lived experience inclusion, trauma-informed storytelling, and the responsibilities filmmakers carry when telling complex stories.

The workshops will also feature discussions on local film festivals, funding opportunities, and networking with documentary filmmakers from across Alberta.

Min Sook Lee is one of Canada's most acclaimed documentary filmmakers. With a body of work that includes Tiger Spirit, Hogtown: The Politics of Policing, The Real Inglorious Bastards, and Migrant Dreams, Min Sook has shared the voices of people often not heard in Canada. Her latest feature, There Are No Words, premiered at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival, where it received an Honourable Mention for Best Canadian Feature, and later won Best Documentary at the Toronto International Reel Asian Film Festival.

Drawing on decades of experience creating impactful documentaries that engage audiences and spark conversation, Min Sook will share insights from her filmmaking journey, discuss the evolving landscape of documentary storytelling, and her strategy in finding and refining her audience.

We'd like to welcome Sylvester Mwamba Ndumbi to the DOC Alberta Board.
Sylvester joins the Board with unique experience and will serve the remaining year of a previously vacant seat.

Bio:
Sylvester Ndumbi is an award-winning filmmaker and producer with over a decade of international experience creating premium unscripted and scripted content. His work has screened globally and engaged audiences at the highest levels of policy, culture, and entertainment. Most recently, Ndumbi was invited by the United Nations to present his upcoming documentary, War on Carbon, in Brazil, a major international recognition of his leadership in climate and energy storytelling. His previous documentary, Without Leaving Anyone Behind, was selected as an official UN side event at COP28 in Dubai and has since achieved global distribution. Beyond production, Ndumbi is a sought-after speaker, regularly participating on panels around the world alongside global thought leaders. He also serves as a Board Member of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, where he helps steward significant public investment into the province’s creative sector. Combining creative ambition with proven ex*****on, financing expertise, and international production success, Ndumbi brings the leadership and discipline required to serve and contribute to the growth of unscripted work in the province.
