We are a provincial coalition of individuals, service organizations, social justice groups, unions, associations, churches and other organizations whose goal is to raise public awareness on concerns related to Medicare in Alberta and Canada. The Alberta government is moving quickly to shape and implement two tier, American-style health care in Alberta. We need our Federal government to act equally quickly to protect our public health care.

There is no time to waste—Bill 11 is putting the very foundation of Canada's public health care at risk. The Federal Health Minister's statement today is far from enough.

Even before Bill 11, this government's privatization agenda has already resulted in reduced surgical capacity in our public system.

After hundreds of millions of public health care dollars poured into for-profit surgeries, what do we have to show for it? *Minor* reductions in wait times for the simplest (and most lucrative) procedures, while wait times for life-saving procedures like heart and cancer surgeries continue to grow! Setting up a system for patients to pay directly to jump the queue will only exacerbate this concerning divide.

Albertans deserve a health care system that prioritizes their care needs, NOT private profits!

The new regulations for Alberta's alarming "Dual Practice" (aka: Two Tier) legislation were announced yesterday, but far too many questions remain unanswered.

The Minister keeps claiming that Bill 11 won't hurt our public system (how??), but this government has broken Albertans' trust on health care far too many times for us to take her word for it.

In actuality, decades of research from both here in Alberta and around the world proves that preferential paid access to care services like surgeries don't fix wait times. The fact is: two tier health care siphons crucial resources and workers (of which Alberta is already critically short) out of the public system and into the private, making waits longer for everyone but the wealthiest.

We're not buying it!

Everyone in this province deserves timely access to quality public health care—not just those of us who can afford to pay for it.

Spending dollars on rebranding healthcare would have been insult to injury after the cuts to public care and investments in privatization... Thankfully, the Minister reversed this decision after organizations like and people like you spoke up. Don’t get it twisted, we need investments! But where they will make the biggest difference: frontline care. It’s good for healthcare workers, it’s good for Albertans.
