Friends of Medicare Friends of Medicare is a non-profit, non-partisan coalition working to defend, strengthen & expand Alberta’s public health care. Join the fight!

friendsofmedicare.org/join Friends of Medicare (FOM) is a non-partisan organization, not aligned with any political party. We are a provincial coalition of individuals, service organizations, social justice groups, unions, associations, churches and other organizations whose goal is to raise public awareness on concerns related to Medicare in Alberta and Canada. FOM forms associations with other groups when views on health care issues are forged by a common front. Our members share a concern for the preservation of the five principles of Medicare: comprehensive coverage, universality, accessibility, portability, and public administration on a non-profit basis.

Alberta's public healthcare is being destroyed.💔

And Albertans deserve to know what's in store for them as a result of the province's "dual practice" legislation: ❌longer waits, ❌greater costs, and ❌less equitable access to the health care they need. We have a wealth of evidence from around the world (and right here in Alberta) to prove it! Unfortunately, all of that is being ignored by this government, in favour of corporate for-profit interests.💸

That's why Friends of Medicare - Calgary Chapter hit the streets last weekend, spreading the word about Bill 11, and the two-tier, American-style private health care it brings to our province.

We stopped the full-scale profitization of our health care before, and we can do it again—but we need YOUR help! 🫵

What happens in Alberta isn't going to stay in Alberta. When it comes to Bill 11, it's opening a pandora's box on public health care that impacts the whole country - especially those in the Northwest Territories who rely on Alberta's health care system to access care.

Last year we toured the province with Dr. Paul Parks. He's a medical doctor based in Medicine Hat who is passionate about public health care because he knows firsthand how important it is. What he says here is so important: access to public health care isn't partisan, but it is political. And it's only going to get better if we push.

You can support Dr. Park's call for action and "making noise" by taking the one-click-action on our website. It will allow you to send a quick email to our Prime Minister and Federal Health Minister to tell them to reverse two-tier health care in Alberta. And it's a lot easier than the province-wide tour Dr. Parks did last year! 😅

Our own Chris Gallaway wrote an op ed for the Calgary Herald & Edmonton Journal that we hope you'll check out. He reminds us that:

🇨🇦 85% of Canadians support public health care
🇨🇦 Public health care is our economic advantage
🇨🇦 Two-tier U.S.-style health care (Bill 11) is a clear violation of Canada's Health Act

So while we're talking about sovereignty, let's not forget what makes being Canadian special. Join us in writing the Prime Minister and asking for him to enforce Canada's Health Act and reverse two-tier, American-style health care here in Alberta.

Confused? You’re in good company. We’re hearing from people concerned about clarity and costs when it comes to new changes to benefit plans in Alberta that began on October 1.

More costs are being shifted from public coverage on to private insurance plans. That will mean premiums go up and/or coverage will be cut. Ultimately, that means the cost comes back to you.

If you’re fed up with Bill 11 is introducing privatization and American-style two-tier care, please take the time to email our Prime Minister and the Federal Minister of Health and ask them to enforce Canada’s Health Act (check out the link in our bio).
