Yesterday at Life Sciences Week, we announced the Post-Stroke Spasticity Care for Rural Albertans initiative — a collaboration between the Glenrose Hospital Foundation, Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital, YourAlberta (Government of Alberta), University of Alberta Rehabilitation Robotics Lab, AbbVie, and Alberta Innovates that is using technology and virtual care to help bridge geographic barriers for stroke survivors across Alberta.

Through virtual assessment, rehabilitation specialists can remotely assess upper-extremity spasticity in stroke survivors living in rural and remote communities. The initiative uses technology developed at the University of Alberta to support these assessments and connect patients with specialized expertise without requiring them to travel long distances.

What if specialized stroke care could reach more Albertans, no matter where they live?

In collaboration with the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital, YourAlberta (Government of Alberta), University of Alberta Rehabilitation Robotics Lab, AbbVie, and Alberta Innovates, we’re launching the Post-Stroke Spasticity Care for Rural Albertans initiative to help make that possible.

Post-stroke spasticity can cause pain, limit movement, and make everyday activities more difficult. For people living in rural and remote communities, accessing specialized care can also mean travelling long distances, and delays in diagnosis and treatment. This initiative will use virtual assessments to connect patients with specialist physicians in communities across Alberta, helping support earlier diagnosis and faster access to rehabilitative treatments.

It’s one way we’re using partnership and innovation to help bring specialized care closer to home for Albertans across the province.

After representing Canada as an Olympic triple jumper in 1992, Oral O'Gilvie was living an active life until an ordinary day on the golf course changed everything.

While out on the course, Oral suffered a stroke. By the time he reached the hospital, he had already lost all feeling on the left side of his body.

With the support of his care team and countless hours of therapy, including time in the therapeutic pool, Oral regained his independence and walked out of the Glenrose on his own just four weeks later.

Your support helps provide life-changing rehabilitation programs, specialized equipment, and innovative therapies that help patients like Oral rebuild their lives.

What looks like a week full of fun is also a chance to build confidence, friendships, and new skills.

This summer, kids in the Glenrose’s Specialized Rehabilitation Outpatient Program (SROP) made pizzas, visited the mall, and tried wheelchair sports, all part of the program’s Functional Futures camp.

Camps like Functional Futures show that rehabilitation happens in many different ways.

“During seated yoga was the first time my body felt light and moveable since my injury,” shares a Glenrose patient.

Therapeutic seated yoga at the Glenrose provides patients the opportunity to try carefully selected postures, breathing techniques, and movement in a safe and supportive environment. The program, which is supported by the Foundation, helps individuals rebuild strength, balance, flexibility, and mobility, while also reducing stress and improving overall well-being.

A devastating car accident at 14 years old left Joe Battaglia with injuries so severe, he was told he might never walk again.

Over the years, Joe returned to the Glenrose several times for rehabilitation following multiple surgeries, including a rare hip amputation. With the support of the Glenrose team, a computer-controlled prosthetic leg, and countless hours of therapy, Joe regained his independence and returned to the activities he loves, like sailing, golfing, and cycling.

Last year, Joe took on the Courage Ride for the first time on his adaptive trike. This September, he's riding again to give back to the hospital that helped him reclaim his life and to help more patients receive the same life-changing care.
