Volunteers are the heart of ECLC, and this Friday we wanted to put a spotlight on one of the many incredible volunteer lawyers that generously share their time to ECLC and the clients who rely on them. Meet Januel! Januel started volunteering with ECLC when he was still an articling student. After his bar call in 2025, Januel chose to continue volunteering to help people advocate for themselves and make informed decisions.

"I chose to volunteer with the ECLC because I felt a strong responsibility to give back to the community in a meaningful and impactful way, particularly by supporting individuals who face systemic barriers to accessing legal services.

One of the main factors that drew me to the organization is its focus on assisting marginalized populations, including low-income individuals who often lack the financial resources, knowledge, or support systems needed to navigate complex legal processes. I recognize that legal issues, whether related to housing, employment, or family matters, can be overwhelming, especially for those already facing economic or social challenges. Without accessible support, these individuals can be left at a significant disadvantage. Volunteering with the ECLC provides an opportunity to help bridge that gap. I am motivated by the idea that even small contributions, whether through client support, administrative assistance, or public legal education, can make a meaningful difference in someone’s life.

By helping individuals understand their rights and access available resources, I can contribute to empowering them to advocate for themselves and make informed decisions. Overall, my decision to volunteer stems from a combination of social responsibility, a commitment to supporting underserved populations, and contributing to a service that promotes fairness, dignity, and access to justice."

Thank you for volunteering Januel, your desire to make a meaningful difference is felt!

Last Friday, Articling students Ore, Jill, Eunice, along with summer law clerk Amanda, participated in LESA's Family Law Essentials program. They delved into key developments in family law, gained practical insights, and honed their advocacy and practice skills!

We appreciate LESA for organizing this wonderful program that allows these students to take this knowledge with them into their future endeavors!

Yesterday, we had the pleasure of hosting our third legal clinic in partnership wtih the Pride Centre of Edmonton!

The legal system is often daunting enough to navigate as a self-rep, but having a safe, welcoming space to access free legal services and support can make all the difference.

We’re grateful to work alongside allies and partners who are committed to increasing access to justice and creating spaces where individuals feel seen, heard, and supported.

Thank you to the lawyers and law students who signed up and continue to sign up to support this important work. We look forward to continuing to grow this program 💜💜💜
