Congratulations to our very own Emmanuel Onah for being one of the honorees of MacEwan’s 2026 Alumni Awards in the Emerging Leader category that recognizes recent graduates who continue to make significant contributions to their professions and communities.

This annual awards celebrate trendsetters, innovators and leaders who started their journey at MacEwan University and we are delighted that Emmanuel Onah; a community builder, strategist and advocate whose leadership bridges health equity, justice reform and youth empowerment was honoured at a ceremony held yesterday at the Robbins Health Learning Centre, MacEwan University.

As the current director of community initiatives at REACH Edmonton Council for Safe Communities, Onah helps lead strategy and delivery across initiatives that strengthen community safety, inclusion, newcomer belonging and youth well-being.

A seasoned non-profit leader, he previously served as director of operations at the Africa Centre, leading transformative initiatives including culturally safe vaccine clinics that served thousands across North Edmonton during COVID-19 and a free counselling program that supported African, Black and Caribbean Albertans.

Onah co-founded the African Canadian Civic Engagement Council (ACCEC), helping launch the Timbuktu Innovation Hub and supported the establishment of initiatives shaping equitable sentencing practices in Alberta's courts.

His work continues to strengthen pathways for inclusion, leadership and systemic change across Canada.

Congratulation to all the honorees. www.macewan.ca/about-macewan/alumni/awards/emerging-leader-award/

With profound sorrow and deep gratitude, we mourn the passing of Dr. Régine Uwibereyeho King; a remarkable friend, scholar, community-builder, and advocate whose life was a testament to service, courage, and humanity.

Dr. Régine King dedicated her life to building bridges, nurturing communities, and inspiring hope where it was most needed. Through her stellar contributions to academia, she challenged minds and expanded horizons, leaving an enduring intellectual legacy that will continue to shape generations.

She served humanity with compassion, touched lives through her unwavering commitment to justice, dignity, and the well-being of others. Her work was never confined to institutions or titles; it lived in relationships, communities, and the lives transformed by her wisdom, generosity, and care.

A champion of equity and anti-racism; Dr. Régine King spoke truth with courage and conviction. Her leadership illuminated pathways toward a more just and inclusive society, reminding us that meaningful change requires both principled action and deep compassion. Her vision of peace-building was both profound and practical. She understood that lasting peace is rooted in respect, dialogue, healing, and our shared humanity.

We recognize and appreciate her commitment to African Indigenous knowledges. She recognized and celebrated the richness, wisdom, and transformative potential of Indigenous ways of knowing, ensuring that these perspectives were honored, preserved, and elevated within scholarly and community spaces alike.

Dr. Régine Uwibereyeho King's legacy lives on in the communities she strengthened, the minds she inspired and in the memory of her resilience. We extend our deepest condolences to all who knew and loved her.

The lived experiences of Black communities navigating legal challenges have been underrepresented in the conversations that shape policies, services, and access to justice. Today, we have an opportunity to help change that.

African Canadian Civic Engagement Council (ACCEC) with support from Department of Justice Canada, is leading an Alberta-specific community-based research to better understand the legal problems and disputes experienced by Black Albertans. This important work contributes to broader efforts to develop more comprehensive, responsive, and equitable justice policies and frameworks that reflect the realities of diverse communities.

If you are an African, Black, or Caribbean adult living in Alberta who has faced a legal problem or dispute that was difficult to resolve, your experience matters. Your voice can help identify barriers, inform solutions, and ensure that Black perspectives are meaningfully reflected in future justice planning and service delivery.

By sharing your experience, you are helping to build a stronger foundation for accountability, representation, and systemic improvement.

ACCEC remains committed to advancing civic responsibility and evidence-based advocacy that strengthens outcomes for Black communities. Click the link below to begin https://forms.office.com/r/W2mAEAR6mu.
