If there's one thing Volunteer Coordinators might have in common, it's that few of us planned to end up in volunteer engagement. Some of us might even have felt like we were swimming in the deep end, spending our first few months wishing someone had handed us a metaphorical floatie while we figured out the role.

In celebration of International Volunteer Manager Day on November 5, and in partnership with Volunteer Canada and with support from YourAlberta (Government of Alberta), this new learning session was created to help you feel more confident in your role. Whether you are new to volunteer engagement or have been doing this for years, we will share fresh insight into what matters most for meaningful volunteer engagement: relationship-building and storytelling.

Relationships are at the centre of every thriving volunteer program. When you take the time to know your volunteers as whole people, with their own dreams, motivations, and challenges, you create trust and a sense of belonging.

Storytelling is what turns that trust into lasting engagement. Volunteers want to feel part of something meaningful, and your job is to show them how their work connects to the bigger picture. Coordinators who tell that story well can turn casual helpers into lifelong champions.

Today is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

We remember the children who never came home from residential schools, and honour the Survivors who carry those experiences, and the families and Nations still living with that loss. This day calls on all of us to listen, confront historic and ongoing harms, and continue learning about the realities of colonialism and residential schools.

Reconciliation is a continuous journey rooted in truth, respect, and relationship-building. It lives in how we show up in our communities, our organizations, and our everyday choices. Wherever we are on this path, there is room for all of us to keep learning, growing, and fostering spaces of accountability and belonging.

In a new blog post, our colleague Micheal McOuat, a Métis man, reflects on Reconciliation as more Albertans engage in civic life and conversations around the upcoming referendum. He invites us to consider Reconciliation as part of practicing citizenship, with curiosity, honesty, and a willingness to stay in relationship through discomfort.
