Thank you Bissell Centre for being an ally
Indigenous women, girls, and gender-diverse people experience violence at alarming rates. Statistics Canada shows that 26% of all women killed by intimate partner violence are Indigenous — and 86% of 2SLGBTQ+ Indigenous people experience intimate partner violence in their lifetimes.
Today, we recognize this over-representation and call for further action to help end this disproportionate violence that is a direct result of the trauma from colonization.
May 5th is National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2SLGBTQI+ People (MMIWG2S). Recognizing this crisis is part of our active commitment to truth, reconciliation, and decolonization demonstrated daily, incrementally, and substantively through our actions. This includes our Indigenous Engagement program where space is created to connect with ceremony and healing — helping Indigenous people looking for support uncover their unique paths to wholeness and wellbeing.
We are working to ally with our Indigenous family, neighbours, and community to honour their resiliency, strength, and purpose and to end the loss of these precious lives.
