Stopped by quick to say hi to Ryan while he and the crew were wrapping up a project at Alliance Church in Sherwood Park!

Ryan is our Vice President North on the Local 1 Executive Team and a longtime foreman with Scorpio Masonry. Before joining Scorpio, Ryan also owned and operated his own masonry business, bringing years of experience and perspective to the trade.

Always great to catch our members out on site and see the work they’re putting in across the region.

Su***de is a leading cause of death in the United States and Canada, and workers in the construction industry are impacted at higher-than-average rates.

This ***dePreventionMonth, we have a message for our BAC brothers and sisters in need: you matter, your wellbeing matters, you are not alone, and help is available: https://bacbenefits.org/map/map-now

We’re excited to welcome Mason's Legacy as our newest signatory contractor here at Bricklayers & Allied Craftworkers Local 1 Alberta.

Mason’s Legacy specializes in restoration, historical preservation, and residential and commercial repair work. Their experience and knowledge in the masonry trade make them a great addition to our contractor group and to the Edmonton region.

We’re proud to work alongside contractors who value skilled masonry and the people behind the work, and we’re looking forward to seeing what’s ahead for Mason’s Legacy.

Time for another weekly update!

Ken will be in Fort McMurray completing site visits at several locations to meet with our members and contractor management.

Around the hall, we’re keeping up with some ongoing building maintenance (does it ever end? 😅), while the IMI Alberta - Edmonton Training Centre team is getting ready for apprenticeship training and continuing work on the example fireplace build for our 3rd-year apprentices heading into class in October.

We’ll also have some of our staff at the Careers Under Construction breakfast in Fort Saskatchewan on Thursday, and on Friday we’ll be welcoming Women Building Futures for another ‘day in the life’ session!

Friendly reminder that our first union meeting back after the summer break is coming up on Wednesday, September 9th. We’d love to see you there!

FUN FACT: We’re older than Alberta.

Yuppp, you read that right.

BAC Local 1 was chartered before Alberta even officially became a province.

In those early days, brick and tile plants like this one were a huge part of the growing construction industry. Places like J. B. Little & Sons helped supply the materials our members worked with to build the communities around us.

Many years later, we’re still here, still building, and still proud to be part of Alberta’s history. 🧱

Shoutout to Dogpatch and bread + butter bakery up the street for turning 5 years old this week and a reminder that we are the Riverdale OG and have been a cafe / brick yard since 1904.

122 years and counting ☕️

Supporting women in our trade is a huge priority for us. We believe women belong at every level of the construction industry… as labourers, apprentices, journeypeople, leaders, and everything in between.

We still see plenty of negative comments when we talk about women in the trades, and honestly, that just shows us how much work there is still to do.

Progress doesn’t happen by staying quiet or waiting for everyone to agree. It happens by continuing to create opportunities, challenge outdated attitudes, and make sure the next generation knows there is a place for them in this industry.

We’ll keep showing up, speaking up, and supporting women in our trade. Because equality isn’t something we should have to debate, it should be the standard.

Good morning and happy Monday!

This week, we are getting ready for next week’s Fort McMurray site tours, keeping up with some ongoing building maintenance (the Edmonton rain hasn’t exactly helped), and getting started on the example fireplace build for our 3rd-year apprentices heading into class in October.

We’re also sitting down with some fellow unions to share training ideas and best practices. We always love the opportunity to learn from each other!

Have a great week, be safe, and try to have a little fun.
