📸We’re looking for photos for a Father’s Day post and want your help!

Do you have a photo with your dad or grandfather working in the trade together? It doesn’t matter if it was taken 40 years ago or last week, we want to see it.

Old jobsite photos, apprenticeship days, family trade photos, current work pics… send them our way!

We’re proud to see so many generations working in our trade and want to highlight those family connections this Father’s Day.

Here's a little inspiration for you: This photo was taken in May 1991. Our Director of Training (a third-generation bricklayer) was ‘helping’ his dad prepare for a residential job.

If you’d like to share a photo, please send them via email [email protected] or text 587-988-2465 by June 13th.

We’re excited to support the Build Together - Women of the Building Trades of Alberta and their Built for Success fundraiser on June 4th in Edmonton.

This event is raising funds for bursaries and initiatives that help support women pursuing careers in the skilled trades, while bringing our industry together for a great evening of networking, community, and laughs.

We’re proud to support organizations that continue to create opportunities and strengthen the future of the building trades.

🚧 WALL OF THE WEEK WEDNESDAY 🚧

This week we are proud to highlight Mikayla’s wall from Skills Canada / Compétences Canada 2025!

She is a third-year apprentice with Alliance Refractories who continues to push herself and take on new challenges within the trade. In 2025, she won the Skills Canada Alberta Provincial Competition and went on to represent Alberta later that year at the Skills Canada National Competition.

One of the most impressive parts of Mikayla’s journey is that she has never worked in red brick (residential or commercial) yet still stepped up to compete in Skills competitions. As a second-generation bricklayer, she continues to carry on the trade with determination, skill, and a strong willingness to learn.

We are proud to have Mikayla as part of our trade community and can’t wait to see what she accomplishes next! 👏

This month, we want to recognize union member Derek Kowalchuk, who is once again volunteering at this year’s Skills Canada National Competition.

For more than 15 years, Derek has dedicated his time to supporting and mentoring youth in the skilled trades through Skills competitions across the province and country. His continued commitment to helping the next generation learn, grow, and succeed is something we are incredibly proud of.

Thank you Derek, for the many years you’ve spent giving back to the trade. Your passion, leadership, and support for young apprentices and competitors continue to make a lasting impact.

Best of luck to all of the competitors this week, we know the future of our trade is in great hands!

Thank you Scorpio Masonry for continuing to invest in the next generation of skilled tradespeople and supporting our union training programs.

A huge thank you to Scorpio Masonry for their generous donation to the Bricklayer Apprenticeship Program at IMI.

Their contribution of brick, scaffolding, planks, a mortar mixer, and loose steel accessories will play an important role in supporting our third-year apprenticeship class this October.

We are so grateful for their continued support. Partnerships like this help provide our apprentices with valuable hands-on learning opportunities and access to the tools and materials they need to succeed in the trade.

Thank you again for investing in the future of our industry!

IMI Alberta - Edmonton Training Centre featured long-time Local 1 Alberta member Dan Kozey at the 2025 SPEC MIX Bricklayer 500 Alberta Regional competition earlier this week. Dan (and tender Dustin Arndt) took first place and "Top Craftsman" honors, advancing them to the World Championship in Las Vegas.

🧱 WALL OF THE WEEK WEDNESDAY 🧱

This week’s Wall of the Week was built by Dan Kozey last summer at the SPEC MIX Bricklayer 500 Regional Competition in Calgary at the age of 73.

Dan laid an impressive 464 bricks in just one hour to take the win. He then went on to represent our region in Las Vegas at the World Championship, where he laid 473 bricks on the world stage.

The SPEC MIX Bricklayer 500 is one of the most exciting events in masonry, challenging top bricklayers to build a highest quality 26’ long wall in only 60 minutes. Competitors from across North America battle for a shot at over $125,000 in prizes and the title of World Champion.

A friendly reminder that the 2026 Regional Competition will be hosted this October by our friends at SAIT.

Huge kudos to Dan for showing that skill, precision, and passion for the trade only get stronger with time.
