Islands Organic Producers Association

Islands Organic Producers Association The Islands Organic Producers Association is a community of island farmers committed to organic agriculture and an accredited organic Certifying Body.

We're the Islands Organic Producers Association (IOPA) – a community of island farmers committed to organic agriculture. Founded in 1990 as a non-profit, we assist in the development of certified organic farming on Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands. We're also an organic Certifying Body accredited by the Certified Organic Associations of British Columbia (COABC). We aim to administer a fair,

transparent and strict process to assess the operations of organic producers awarding certified organic status to those who meet national and local standards. We also work to promote and strengthen sustainable agriculture in general and to establish a cooperative and complementary relationship among organic producers and consumers.

Seedy Saturday is in full swing 10-2pm at the Cobble Hill Hall in the Cowichan Valley! A few of our lovely IOPA operators are there with wonderful organic offerings, friendly faces and so much knowledge. Pictured here are some Metchosin Farm certified organic seeds β€” they had quite the selection of tried and true favourites as well as harder to find varieties, such as woad and motherwort. Looking forward to getting these started over the next few weeks! πŸ“πŸ“πŸ“

What a busy/buzzing weekend we just had for all the pollinators! β€œOne of the simplest ways to conserve our pollinator populations in an agriculturally reliant world is through organic farming. Organic farming practices can provide critical solutions that not only decrease risks to pollinators, but actively support the growth and health of our pollinator populations.”— Organic Center. 🐝πŸ₯°πŸ Curious about organic certification for your farm here on Vancouver Island? With Vancouver Island finally seeing some sunshine these past few weekends, garden bed sprouts seem to be finally taking off. Did you know that a study done by the Soil Association found that the vitamin and mineral content in organic foods is higher than those in conventionally produced foods? An independent review of the evidence found that organic crops had significantly higher levels β€” including 27% more vitamin c, 29% more magnesium, and 21% more iron, mostly thanks to the nurture rd and minerals found in nurtured and chemical free soil πŸ₯° Pictured here are baby spinach, just loving the cool days but still enjoying a sun bath.
