We're at the Cowichan Gem & Rock Show all weekend long!

10am to 8pm Saturday & 10 to 5pm Sunday

The first morning shift was a huge success - we actually ran out of new membership forms and Don had to print us off some more. I'll share some more photos of the days activities a bit later on... for now you should go check the show out!

The Port Alberni fieldtrip this spring didn't quite go as we had planned, but we still managed to get some interesting Jasper out of it. If you're planning on attending the CanGems Western Canada show this coming weekend (July 17-19) you just might be able to grab a slab for yourself!

Our slabs are always for sale at the member's only saw shop located in Cobble hill. We have tons of local stone, and quite a bit of specialty ones from members who enjoy traversing the globe too. Prices are very modest, I've picked up some beautiful material(plume agate!) for as little as $3, with large thick slabs of rarer material up to $30.

We've been a little quiet on here lately, but rest assured we've been busy getting everything ready for our Gem Show, now just 8 days away, and our biggest annual appearance at the Cobble Hill Fair next month.

Here are a few shots from a visit to the saw shop a little while back. I definitely wasn't expecting to find that inside! The bright yellow banding was a welcome surprise.

Sadly, it's pretty fractured, so I don't think it'll make good cabochons. But that's part of the hobby, though—not every rock turns into a keeper. Sometimes the joy is simply in finding out what's been hiding inside all along.

Has anyone else cut into a rock lately that turned out completely different than you expected?

Our Annual BBQ Picnic is happening today!

Join us anytime after 3:00 PM at Darlene's* as we kick off another great summer gathering. Dinner will be served around 5:00 PM, with pulled pork on the menu.

Please remember to bring:
• Your own plate, bowl, cup and cutlery
• A side dish or dessert to share
• A lawn chair (there are a few chairs available, but not enough for everyone)

We'll also have a couple of quick, optional activities where members can lend a hand preparing for our upcoming Gem Show and the Cobble Hill Fair.

Whether the sun is shining or the weather cools off a little, Darlene has plenty of room for us to gather comfortably.

We can't wait to see everyone this afternoon!
