Tonight at the Cowichan Valley Rockhounds club meeting, we’re pleased to welcome Scott Kraw of Van Isle Rocks and Spheres as our featured guest.

Scott will be sharing his knowledge and experience with lapidary sphere making — a careful, hands-on process that takes patience, skill, and a good eye for the stone. Spheres are a favourite among many rockhounds because they show off a rock from every angle: colour, pattern, movement, polish, and all the little surprises that can come out once the work begins.

Whether you’re brand new to rockhounding, curious about lapidary, or already spend a suspicious amount of time admiring rocks under good lighting, this is a great chance to learn more from someone who is passionate about the craft.

Our monthly meetings are a good way to meet other local rockhounds, hear what’s happening in the club, learn something new, and get a better feel for the Vancouver Island rock and lapidary community.

Join us tonight at 7 PM at The Hub Gym.

Guests and new members are always welcome. Come for the meeting, stay for the rocks, and leave with a little more appreciation for what goes into making a polished stone sphere.

This Sunday!

We’ve been invited out to explore a brand new collecting area after one of our members discovered some absolutely incredible banded material in a Vancouver Island creek.

This upcoming members-only field trip on Sunday, May 24 will involve creek walking, rock hunting, good company, and hopefully a few mystery finds worth cutting open back at the saw shop.

If you’ve been looking for an excuse to get outside, meet fellow rockhounds, and possibly discover something special before everyone else does… this is your sign.

Spots are limited and attendance must be registered ahead of time for liability coverage.

There is something therapeutic about carving a simple piece of stone into something with shape, character, and a bit of heart.

On Sunday, May 31, we’re lucky to have Sheila Lewis of Absolute Soapstone joining us from Salmon Arm for a full-day Soapstone Carving Workshop.

Sheila will be bringing the tools, materials, stone, and know-how — all you need to bring is yourself, your lunch, and the willingness to make a little stone dust in good company. She’ll guide the class through carving a soapstone loon, while introducing participants to the feel, process, and patience of working with this beautiful carving material.

The workshop will be held outdoors under the tent at the Bailey’s home in Cobble Hill, which is also home to the club's saw shop. It’s a fitting spot for a day of carving, visiting, learning, and slowly convincing a rock to become a bird.

We’ll have coffee, hot water for tea, and cold drinking water available throughout the day. Please bring your own lunch and snacks, and once we have final numbers, we may put out a call for a few extra chairs.

Bring something interesting to share—your best rock, your weirdest rock, or that one you picked up for no reason other than “it felt right.” That’s how it starts, by the way. One rock… then suddenly you’ve got buckets, shelves, and a system. A system for your lovely rocks.

But do you have a way of showing off your rocks to fellow rock lovers?

Well, you can tonight!

If you're not too busy categorizing your collection... come by The Hub at 7 for door prizes, show & tell, field trip planning, and good old rock talk over homemade treats.

Not your average egg hunt…

Kids searching the community center for hidden rockhounding eggs. Painted rocks everywhere. A few very proud finds being shown off to anyone who would listen.

Safe to say… it was a good day.

We put together a quick recap—see if you can spot yourself (or someone you know).

This year’s Easter Fair at The Hub was one of those days that just rocked—sunshine, families, and a steady buzz of activity from start to finish. Our rock painting table, rare rockhound eggs, spin-…

If you’ve been meaning to come check out a meeting, this is a good one to start with. We've got an adventurous trip planned you don't want to miss out on hearing about.

Our monthly meet-up is next week, and it’s always a great mix of show-and-tell, learning something new, and seeing what everyone’s been finding out in the wild or working on in the shop.

Bring a piece, bring a question, or just come take a look—there’s always something interesting on the table.

If you’re heading to the Hub’s Easter Fair with the kids on Sunday, make sure to swing by and see us.

We’ll be in the workshop near the playground, and a family friendly rock painting table outside. It’s a relaxed, hands-on stop where kids can make something, discover something, and maybe leave with a new favorite rock. Inside you'll find our Spin to Win game, blind tumbled rock bags, displays and club made treasures.

We’ve also hidden eggs containing special surprises all around the community center.. be sure to keep an eye out for these!

Calling all crafty rock lovers - We’ve got a few last spots open in our Polymer Clay Workshop. If you’ve ever picked up a rock and thought “this would make such a cool necklace” — this is your chance. No fancy equipment, no experience needed.

We’ll walk you through everything and you’ll head home with 3 finished pendants you actually want to wear (or gift… if you’re feeling generous).

It’s relaxed, creative, and a really fun way to turn your favorite finds into something personal.

Spots are limited and almost gone—grab one while you can.
