Drumheller RCMP would like to remind residents of important safety considerations as we adjust to Daylight Saving Time. As with all seasonal time changes, visibility on the roads, home security, and general awareness can be affected, making it a good opportunity to review important safety measures.
Drumheller RCMP recommend the following fall safety tips:
🔹Drivers should turn on their headlights earlier in the day to ensure they are visible to other motorists, particularly during the first week after the time change when evenings get darker.
🔹Before heading out, check that all vehicle lights, including brake lights, headlights, and turn signals, are working properly to maintain safe visibility on the roads.
🔹It is important to reduce speed in low-light conditions, especially in residential areas, school zones, and near pedestrian crossings, to prevent accidents.
🔹Motorists should pay close attention to pedestrians and cyclists, who may be harder to see in the early evening hours, and always yield where appropriate.
🔹During early mornings, drivers should be aware that the rising sun can cause glare that reduces visibility, and using sunglasses can help mitigate this risk.
🔹Residents should lock all doors and windows, even when leaving the house for a short time, as shorter daylight hours can increase opportunities for break-ins.
🔹Outdoor lighting, such as motion-sensor lights or timed porch lights, should be used to improve visibility around the home and deter potential intruders.
🔹Use the time change as a reminder to check that your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are functioning properly and replace batteries if needed. These devices play a critical role in home safety.
Lastly, please ensure your safety kit in your vehicle is adequate for winter conditions. A full list of items to have in your vehicle can be found here: https://ow.ly/9npa50XlVkO
