Healthy Communities Coalition

Healthy Communities Coalition The Healthy Communities Coalition supports the wellness of people who live, work and play in Drayton Valley, Breton and the Brazeau County.

The Healthy Communities Coalition (HCC) started in response to community crisis centering on gang and drug activity that had reached levels that caused concern for general community safety and wellbeing. The issue was quickly dealt with by local law enforcement and other supports. The communications that happened as a result between participants at the table determined the group should stay active

work towards Healthy Communities as a collective. The group was approached by the Town of Drayton Valley and the County of Brazeau to assist in building the Social Development Plan 2015-2019. The Village of Breton joined the coalition in 2016. Members at large were approved in late 2016. Prior to the development of the HCC others had identified the need for interagency type groups that would allow for collaboration of partners not just sharing of what was happening as in a traditional interagency group. Promoting Youth Potential was the first group developed to focus solely on youth development and empowerment. The group explored the Jasper Place Model and thought the concept would possibly transfer well into our communities.

The Man Van is coming to Drayton Valley on Saturday, May 2, 2026.

What is the MAN VAN?
THE MAN VAN is Canada’s only mobile men’s health clinic, traveling throughout Calgary and rural Alberta educating men on the importance of early prostate cancer awareness and their overall health.

What does it do?
The Van provides on-the-spot Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) blood tests to men as well as blood pressure, blood glucose and waist circumference measurements at select clinics.

Who can visit the MAN VAN?
Men aged 40-70 who are not currently being seen by a doctor for any prostate problems are eligible for a baseline PSA blood test.

What can I expect when I visit the MAN VAN?
When a man visits the MAN VAN, he is greeted by a host, often a prostate cancer survivor, who explains the PSA test and its importance. From there, he will visit one of our medical professionals who will draw ½ teaspoon of blood from his vein. Within one week, he will receive the PSA results in the mail. If the result is higher than the recommended level, the Prostate Cancer Centre will call the participant to discuss follow-up. There is no health care needed to visit the MAN VAN. It is a free service for men, funded entirely through private donations and corporate sponsorships. Men visiting the MAN VAN visit often takes less than 10 minutes and there is no appointment necessary.

Why is it Important?
One in six men in Alberta will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime, but when caught early it is very treatable. A PSA test is a simple blood test that may help in early detection. The Prostate Cancer Centre recommends men should have a baseline PSA test starting at age 40. Health measurements such as blood pressure, blood sugar and waist circumference are often good indicators of a man’s health status and are very closely linked to some of the main health issues facing men, such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer and obesity.
