9–10 May 2026, the parish of the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Toronto solemnly and prayerfully welcomed the reliquary containing a particle of the holy relics of the great saint of God — St. John, Archbishop of Shanghai and San Francisco, the Wonderworker. The holy relic was brought to Toronto especially for the veneration of the faithful by the mitred archpriest Fr. Peter Perekrestov, dean of the Cathedral of the Mother of God “Joy of All Who Sorrow” in San Francisco.
Over the course of two days, hundreds of Orthodox Christians streamed to the cathedral in order reverently to venerate the honorable relics of St. John — the wondrous archpastor of the Russian Diaspora, man of prayer, wonderworker, and swift helper to all who flee unto him with faith.
On Saturday evening, the holy relic remained in the cathedral during the All-Night Vigil, at which numerous worshippers offered fervent prayers to St. John. The following day, Sunday, the veneration of the holy relics continued prior to the Divine Liturgy.

Following the Liturgy, the rector of the Holy Trinity cathedral, the mitred archpriest Fr. Vladimir Malchenko, served a moleben to St. John of Shanghai, offering prayers for the health and salvation of all gathered. Concelebrating with the rector were Archpriest Peter Perekrestov, Priest Pavel Ruiz-Gomar, Priest Valentin Lossev, together with Protodeacon Alexander Morin and Deacon Georgy Bolshan.

Especially solemn and spiritually uplifting was the Sunday evening service. Before the reliquary containing the relics, an akathist to St. John of Shanghai was served, glorifying the saint as a great wonderworker and swift helper in sicknesses, sorrows, and the needs of daily life. Joining the cathedral clergy were Archpriest Georgy Tiu, Priest Dimitry Chemeris, as well as representatives of other Local Orthodox Churches: Igumen Polycarp of the Monastery of the Exaltation of Christ in Mono, Ontario (Romanian Orthodox Church), Archpriest Geoffrey Korz (Orthodox Church in America), and Archpriest Thomas Pekurishvili (Georgian Orthodox Church).

Following the akatist, the Canadian premiere of the documentary film “The Fragrance of Holiness,” dedicated to the ascetic life and service of St. John of Shanghai, took place. The film recounts his missionary endeavors, love for neighbor, self-sacrificing archpastoral ministry, and his strengthening of the Orthodox Faith among the scattered Russian people throughout the diaspora. Created for the 30th anniversary of the glorification of St. John, the documentary includes unique archival footage, rare photographs, and previously unpublished materials from U.S. state archives, the personal archive of Fr. Peter Perekrestov, and other closed archival collections in America.

After the film screening, at the request of many clergy and parishioners, Fr. Peter Perekrestov shared impressions from his recent trip to Moscow as part of the delegation of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia attending the celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of the episcopal consecration of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia. Fr. Peter spoke of his meetings with His Holiness the Patriarch, clergy, and countless faithful, bearing witness to the profound spiritual unity and living bond uniting the Russian Orthodox people throughout the world.

Fr. Peter also noted that on March 15, in Moscow, before a full audience in the Cathedral Chamber Hall, the Russian premiere of his documentary film “The Fragrance of Holiness” took place, attracting considerable interest among clergy, historians, and the Orthodox public.

Thus concluded the пребывание of the reliquary containing the relics of St. John of Shanghai in Toronto. Yet for the many faithful, these days became a true spiritual consolation and a living testimony to the unceasing prayerful intercession of the great hierarch of the Russian Diaspora, who even now strengthens all who come unto him with faith and love.

Sunday of the Holy Myrrh-bearing Women is a particularly venerated day for the parish of the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Toronto. For this community, the feast holds not only general ecclesiastical significance, but also a profound inner, parish-centere meaning: the Sisterhood of the Cathedral bears the name of the Holy Myrrh-bearing Women.
For 77 years—since the founding of the parish in 1949—the sisters have labored unceasingly in their obedience (poslushanie) for the good of the Holy Church. Over these decades, much has changed: generations of clergy and parishioners have come and gone, and the composition of the Sisterhood has been renewed. Yet their self-sacrificing ministry remains unchanged, marked by love, patience, and dedication. Through the labors of the sisters, not only is constant care shown to the faithful, but the material life of the parish is also substantially supported—whether through the repair and adornment of the church bulding or in meeting its many practical needs.
On Sunday, April 26, following the Divine Liturgy at Holy Trinity Cathedral, a solemn Thanksgiving Moleben was served. The service was led by the Mitred Archpriest and Rector of the Cathedral, Father Vladimir Malchenko. During the Moleben, special petitions were offered for all the sisters, with each being commemorated by name. Concelebrating with the Rector were Priest Pau Ruiz-Gomar and Priest Valentin Lossev, with Protodeacon Alexander Morin and Deacon Georgy Bolshan assisting.

The parishioners and clergy of the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Toronto prayerfully entered upon the days of the Holy Forty Days, gathering according to pious tradition for the lengthy weekday Lenten services.

The evening services with the reading of the Great Penitential Canon of St. Andrew of Crete are conducted with particular reverence. Despite the large number of worshippers, a spirit of silence and attentive recollection prevailed in the храм: the faithful listened with deep concentration to the compunctionate words of the Canon, read by the Dean of the Eastern Canada District, Mitred Archpriest Vladimir Malchenko.

The splendid Cathedral choir, under the direction of Alexander Pushchin, helped the faithful to enter more deeply into the penitential spirit of the first days of the Fast. The harmonious and prayerful rendering of the Lenten hymns created a special spiritual atmosphere, fostering inward recollection and heartfelt prayer.

The parish approached the beginning of the Fast with tangible labors and loving care for the splendour of God’s house. On the eve of Lent, a major restoration of the flooring was completed: the worn parquet was entirely replaced with a new, high-quality Canadian oak floor. Work also continues on the structural reinforcement of the foundation beneath the steps of the main entrance, as well as on the restoration of the iconographic frescoes, lending the Cathedral’s interior a renewed beauty and dignity.

A joyful development for the parish has also been the beginning of rehearsals for a newly established children’s choir under the direction of Alexandra Sidorova. The young singers are not only preparing to participate in festal services and parish events, but are also systematically studying the foundations of church singing, thereby being initiated into the living tradition of Orthodox liturgical heritage.

As they enter upon the days of Great Lent, the clergy and faithful of the Cathedral, with hope and trust in the mercy of God, continue the path of repentance, prayer, and renewal—uniting the inner labor of the soul with care for the House of God and the upbringing of the younger generation in the faith and in the culture of the Church.
