It always feels a little magical to close a chalky white kiln and open it a few days later to find a rainbow. 🌈

Here’s a before-and-after for this sweet guy who went in for his second firing last week. This wee monster was made by our member Amanda (amandablaineartist), inspired by the generous how-to videos shared by Gretchen—the monster momma behind biggirlco.

It’s always so wonderful when artists share their process and welcome others to create along with them. We just love all the quirky personalities Gretchen brings to life in her kiln!

Every potter has that tool—the one you reach for without thinking, the one you’d replace immediately if it went missing.

Is it a perfectly broken-in rib? A trimming tool that just fits your hand? Or something totally unexpected?

✨ Tell us: what’s your favourite tool in your pottery practice, and why? Bonus points if it’s unconventional!

🥵 We’re hot stuff 🥵

Our popular high-fire clays typically fire at cone 10, which ranges between ~1260–1305°C (~2300–2380°F). This temperature range creates fully vitrified, dense and durable ceramic bodies from high-fire stoneware and porcelain clays. The exact temperature depends on the speed of firing, with faster firings requiring slightly higher temperatures to achieve the same effect.

Do you want to come play in the mud?

We’re currently accepting membership applications for late summer intake at the St. Albert Potters Guild.

Our Guild brings experienced potters together to learn, create, share knowledge and grow. If you’re passionate about ceramics and looking to become part of a supportive, creative pottery community, we’d love to hear from you.

We are accepting applications until May 30. Space is limited and new members are selected through a competitive process. Show us your best!

Thank you for supporting a great cause.

Our spring pottery sale has come to an end, and we are so grateful to everyone who came out to shop, visit, and support our Guild. Because of your generosity, this event was about more than beautiful handmade pottery — it was about giving back.

We donated a percentage of the proceeds from our spring sale to CASA House, which helps them continue their vital work providing mental health services to Albertans aged three to 18 and their families. Every purchase made a difference, and we couldn’t be more thankful for the opportunity to turn creativity into meaningful support. With help from you, we donated nearly $1,000 to help kids in our community.

From our talented potters to our amazing visitors — thank you for making this sale such a success. We’re proud of what we accomplished together.

See you in the fall!

🔥 What is saggar firing?

Saggar firing is an alternative firing technique that embraces both chemistry and chance. Burnished, bisque-fired pieces are placed inside a sealed container (called a saggar) along with organic materials like leaves, sawdust, salts or metals. As the temperature rises, those materials react with the surface of the clay—creating smoky patterns, flashes of colour, and completely one-of-a-kind finishes.

Because the process is unpredictable, no two pieces ever come out the same. That’s what makes it so exciting for artists.

This May, members of our St. Albert Potters’ Guild will be exploring saggar firing as we continue to build skills, experiment with new techniques, and push our creative boundaries.

We can’t wait to see what comes out of the kiln. ✨

💐 Celebrate Mom with something as unique as she is. 💐

Did you know the St. Albert Place Visual Arts Council (SAPVAC) has a retail shop? It’s a great place to find a meaningful, lasting Mother’s Day gift. Handmade pottery is crafted with care and made to be used every day.

W.A.R.E.S., located on the main floor of St. Albert Place, showcases a rotating selection of handmade pottery from our members. You can also shop handmade goods from other guilds, including paintings, quilts and more.

Next time you’re downtown, come take a look. You might just find your new favourite piece or a bespoke present for someone special.

Ah, the “almost perfect” piece… Every maker has them—the ones that are ⭐️so close⭐️ to perfect.

Maybe the glaze didn’t do what you hoped. The shape could be the slightest bit off. Or a tiny hairline crack shows up at the finish line. Something small can keep a pot from being a top-tier piece.

We call them “seconds,” but they’re still first in our hearts.

They still pour, hold and function as they should. They just carry a little extra ✨personality.✨

And often, they still end up being someone’s favourite piece, like this charcuterie bowl by Guild member Amanda. (Please don’t ask her how she felt when she turned it over after its final firing… She is still emotionally recovering.)

Do you own a “second”?

See pottery come to life!

One of the best parts of our spring pottery sale is watching the magic happen right before your eyes. Our talented Guild members are on site throughout the sale, sharing live demonstrations and showing how we transform clay into beautiful, handmade ceramics. Willie’s an expert and we love to watch her throw!

Come by St. Albert Place (5 St. Anne Street) to shop one-of-a-kind pieces, meet the artists, ask questions, and experience the creative process up close. It’s lively, inspiring, and a great way to truly connect with the art you take home!

We’re here until 5 p.m. on Saturday.
