Every pot tells a story… and every maker leaves a mark. 🖊️

Makers’ marks are the signatures of the ceramic world—small but meaningful impressions that connect a finished piece back to the hands that created it. Whether stamped, carved or painted, each mark is as unique as the artist behind it.

At the St. Albert Potters Guild, you’ll find a beautiful variety of makers’ marks across our members’ work. Some are bold and graphic, others subtle and hidden—but all of them represent pride, craftsmanship and identity.

If you’re just starting your pottery journey, creating your own makers’ mark is an exciting milestone. It’s a way to claim your work and become part of a long tradition of artists leaving their signature in clay.

There’s something really special about how knowledge moves through our studio…

This week, one of our members captured a beautiful moment of shared learning around an underglaze transfer technique—a process that came to life through collaboration, curiosity and encouragement.

Nicole recently saw this technique used in China and the knowledge was passed along by Dianne here in the studio. With a sample bisque piece provided by Dianne, transfers shared by Jill, and support and encouragement from Shirley and Ruth, it became a true hands-on learning moment.

It’s a perfect example of what makes our Guild so special—members showing up for one another, sharing what they know, and creating space to try, learn and try again.

Because let’s be honest… sometimes it takes a few attempts to get it just right and that’s all part of the process.

As the final step in the Saggar firing process, layers of clay, paper, organic materials and minerals come away to reveal what the fire decided. No previews, no guarantees—just completely one-of-a-kind results every time.

We recently showed you how we wrap vessels to prepare them for the Saggar firing process. Here’s a glimpse into what comes next. 👀

Each piece is transformed by heat into something completely one-of-a-kind. The clay-wrapped creations head into a barrel kiln at our outdoor Raku firing site. Once the kilns reach temperature, each bundle goes into a sealable container with more organic material, like hay, leaves, newspaper and more. With the lid on tight, the magic happens.

It’s messy, unpredictable, and always worth it.

We’ll show you all the wonderful results next. Any guesses what the pieces will look like?

What do copper, banana peels, steel wool, fabric strips and Miracle Grow have in common? You can use them to decorate your pottery!

Some of our members recently experimented with saggar firing. This week we’re going to take you through the process and share what we uncovered.

Here’s how it started. First, our members threw and bisque fired their vessels. Then the real fun began! Each bisqued piece is covered in a combination of organic and chemical ingredients—anything from banana peels and corn husks to Miracle Grow and Emergen-C vitamin powder.

These magical ingredients are secured to each vessel with wire and a thin layer of clay before heading back into the fire.

Next we’ll show you the firing process, then stay tuned to see the fantastic results!

Here’s a before-and-after for this sweet guy who went in for his second firing last week. This wee monster was made by our member Amanda (amandablaineartist), inspired by the generous how-to videos shared by Gretchen—the monster momma behind biggirlco.

It’s always so wonderful when artists share their process and welcome others to create along with them. We just love all the quirky personalities Gretchen brings to life in her kiln!

🥵 We’re hot stuff 🥵

Our popular high-fire clays typically fire at cone 10, which ranges between ~1260–1305°C (~2300–2380°F). This temperature range creates fully vitrified, dense and durable ceramic bodies from high-fire stoneware and porcelain clays. The exact temperature depends on the speed of firing, with faster firings requiring slightly higher temperatures to achieve the same effect.

We’re currently accepting membership applications for late summer intake at the St. Albert Potters Guild.

Our Guild brings experienced potters together to learn, create, share knowledge and grow. If you’re passionate about ceramics and looking to become part of a supportive, creative pottery community, we’d love to hear from you.

We are accepting applications until May 30. Space is limited and new members are selected through a competitive process. Show us your best!
