Do you have a passion for marketing, storytelling, tourism, and community engagement?

The D***o Discovery Centre is seeking a creative and organized individual to lead the implementation of our Marketing & Communications Initiative. This exciting opportunity will help showcase the stories, history, and unique experiences that make D***o one of Newfoundland and Labrador's most recognizable destinations.

In this role, you will:
✅ Coordinate marketing campaigns and promotional activities
✅ Develop engaging content for social media, website, and communications
✅ Assist with the creation of marketing materials and advertising campaigns
✅ Coordinate media opportunities and community outreach
✅ Help promote special events, including the Community Celebration & Official Opening of the Jimmy Kimmel Experience

We're looking for someone with strong communication skills, marketing experience, creativity, and a passion for promoting our community.

There are a few theories — and let’s just say… no one’s 100% sure 😉

From early explorers sailing into Trinity Bay to stories passed down over generations, the name D***o has a history that’s just as interesting as the place itself.

👉 Was it an old word for “still waters”?
👉 A twist on a European term?
👉 Or something else entirely?

Well… you’ll have to come see for yourself 😄

We’re hiring a Heritage Interpreter at the D***o Discovery Centre — someone who’s friendly, reliable, and enjoys chatting with people (you’ll be doing plenty of that 😄).

👉 If you’ve got a bit of personality and don’t mind telling a story or two, you’ll fit right in.

🛒 Come for the essentials… stay for the yarns

Imagine this…

You heads into the local store — not for bread (every house made their own 😉) — but for the real necessities… a bit of yeast and sugar, maybe some tea… and of course, a few sweets if you were lucky 😄

Next thing you knows, you’re after staying an hour, caught up on all the news, and leaving with more than you planned anyway.

That was life in D***o.

At one time, there were over 20 general stores in the community — not just shops, but the heart of it all. A place for supplies, stories, and a good laugh or two.

👉 “Welcome to D***o, Newfoundland… where even Captain D***o is real.” 👀

Well… kind of. 😉

Back in the 1980s, a young local fella had a thought that stuck:
👉 If there’s a Captain Canada… why not a Captain D***o?

And just like that, a bit of Newfoundland creativity turned into a full-blown community character. 🇨🇦⚓

From his early days down by the water to the bright yellow rain gear we know today, Captain D***o has become one of those stories you just can’t make up… but somehow, we did. 😄

🐟 Did you know D***o once farmed cod? 🐟

Long before hashtags and hashtags-with-attitude, D***o was making waves in innovation. Back in the late 1800s, our community was home to one of Newfoundland’s earliest cod fish hatcheries—producing millions of young codfish and putting D***o on the map in a big way.

📜 Why was it built?
🏗️ What did it look like?
❓ And why did it shut down?

That’s all part of the story waiting to be discovered at the D***o Discovery Centre.

🦑 A Giant Squid… right here in D***o?!

In December 1933, Reuben Reid and Richard Gosse went out for firewood…
What they found the next day was far more unexpected.

A dead giant squid, floating in D***o Arm.

This remarkable true story is part of our Mystery of the Deep exhibit at the D***o Discovery Centre.
And today, visitors can also see a life-size quilted replica squid, beautifully created by the Baccalieu Quilters Guild 🧵🦑
