Each fall, The Royal Canadian Legion runs an Arts and Literary Contest, open to all students from Kindergarten to Grade 12 across Canada. There are four categories, Black & White poster, Colour Poster, Essay and Poem and four group levels Primary (K - Gr 3, posters only), Junior, (Gr 4 - 6) Intermediate (Gr 7-9) and Senior (Gr 10-12).
Schools forward the entries to local RCL branches where they are judged against national criteria.
In November 2025, Sgt. Levi Hollett Memorial BR 39 in D***o, received over 250 entries from the four elementary schools and one high school in our area. We presented first, second and third prizes to a total of 23 students across all categories. These Branch winners were hen sent to Provincial Command where they are judged against entries from all of NL & Lab.
Primary - Intermediate winners will receive a cash prize. and certificate. Senior winners from Newfoundland and Labrador receive a cash prize plus a life-changing trip to Europe to attend Remembrance ceremonies at Beaumont Hamel on July 1st.
Over the past 25 years, Br 39 has had approximately 13 first and second place winners who journeyed to Beaumont Hamel. This year marks a milestone for our branch and for the participating schools. Four students from Crescent Collegiate in Blaketown have qualified for this trip.
Congratulations are going to:
Olivia Cranford, 1st Place B& W Poster
Jean Crocker, 3rd Place B & W Poster
Jaeda White 2nd Place Colour Poster
Zoe George 3rd Place Colour Poster.

This success highlights the fantastic art skills of the young people in at Crescent Collegiate. They will be joining senior students from six other schools across the Province. We congratulate these students and wish them a memorable trip to France.

The Provincial winners entries then go up against entries from all across Canada. Winners at the national level receive a trip to Ottawa to represent Canada's youth at the National Remembrance Ceremony on Nov. 11. Hopefully, our local winners will do well at this level, too.

Winners for the Primary to Intermediate categories will be announced when they are received by Branch 39 and presented to the students.

The schools in Branch 39's area will be hosting Remembrance assemblies in the later part of this week. This is where the spirit of remembrance starts, with the youth. Promote it early and it will stick. Branch 39 members will be attending all of the assemblies. It would be fantastic to see any veterans who have time to drop in to your local school to take part in the assemblies - just be there. The schedule:

Friday, 07 Nov 11am at Holy Family in Chapel Arm and Crescent Collegiate in Blaketown.
