The most critical financial safety-net for low and moderate -income seniors in Canada is the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS). When paired with the base Old Age Security (OAS) pension, it forms the core of federal income support for low-income older adults.

But with eligibility for the GIS capped at about $1900/ month and then clawed back, seniors are being held in poverty. There isn't much left over after rent!

ALSO what about Spiking food prices and Escalating Rents for those in Core Housing need.

Recent reports say rents have gone down BUT that is focused on HIGH-end luxury rents not rents for those in core housing need.

1/3 of single female seniors are in core housing need.

Nova Scotiaโ€™s housing numbers show why low-income and affordable housing are not simply a social serviceโ€”they are an essential part of a healthy community.

Even with the minimum wage recently increasing to $17.00 an hour, the average rent shown in this comparison remains far beyond what many minimum-wage and low-income households can reasonably afford. Nova Scotia requires approximately 141 hours of minimum-wage work each month just to cover the average rentโ€”before paying for food, heat, electricity, transportation, childcare, medication, or other necessities.

This is why low-income housing is needed:

People working full-time can still be housing insecure. Having a job does not necessarily mean someone can afford market rent.
Seniors and people living on fixed incomes can be forced to choose between housing, food, medication and other necessities.
People with disabilities may face additional costs while having limited income and difficulty finding accessible housing.
Families and single parents need stable housing so children can grow up in a safe and consistent environment.
Young people and young families need an opportunity to establish themselves without having an unsustainable portion of their income consumed by rent.
Communities need workers who can afford to live where they work. When housing is unavailable or unaffordable, it affects employers, schools, healthcare, businesses and the overall community.
Stable housing helps prevent homelessness. Providing affordable housing before a household reaches a crisis is far less disruptive than trying to address homelessness after someone has lost their home.
Housing should not be considered affordable simply because someone can technically pay the rent. If paying the rent leaves a household without enough money for basic necessities, the housing is not truly affordable.

Nova Scotia needs a range of housing optionsโ€”including deeply affordable and rent-geared-to-income housingโ€”because not everyone can afford market rents, even when they are working.

A roof over your head is a basic foundation for health, security, employment, education and community. Affordable housing isnโ€™t a luxury. Itโ€™s infrastructure that communities need to thrive.
