Association for Denman Island Marine Stewards

Association for Denman Island Marine Stewards The Association for Denman Island Marine Stewards (ADIMS) provides the residents of Denman Island with a strong voice in protecting our marine environment.

We advocate for protection of Baynes Sound, Lambert Channel and surrounding waters. ADIMS is a non-profit organization that works at raising awareness about the importance of our marine environment and the need to protect it. We advocate respect for the marine ecosystem and all its inhabitants. The marine ecosystem has an inherent right to be protected, conserved, maintained and restored, so that

all its life sustaining functions continue into the future. We recognize that all life, including our own, depends on the oceans continuing to live and to flourish. The changes to the beaches and waters in Baynes Sound over the past few decades are profound. The traditional ‘Mom & Pop’ operations have largely disappeared becoming much larger enterprises that are often foreign owned. The previously benign and unobtrusive practices now use structures, mechanized equipment, and practices that are harmful to the marine ecosystem. Ninety percent of the coastline of Baynes Sound is under shellfish tenures. Some of the harmful industry practices include driving on the beach, predator netting, beach modification, destruction of ‘predator species’ (starfish, crabs and moonsnails), and on-going, large amounts of industry debris (90% plastics). These practices destroy habitat for marine birds, spawning areas for forage fish and other marine life and result in a deterioration and loss of marine areas for other uses and values such as tourism, recreation, safe anchorages and other fisheries (both sport and commercial).

- Two group photos added at the end!

Thanks again to all our volunteers (including those who worked at collecting debris the week before the Big Sort) and Lisa Pierce who did (and continues to do!) a fantastic job as the beach cleanup coordinator this year!

___________

Thanks to our amazing and dedicated volunteers who helped with the beach cleanup! Here are some photos from the Big Sort event today. Sorry for not catching everyone - there was glare from the sun, which made it challenging to get some pics. A group photo is coming!

We're deeply concerned about the proposed Coastal Gateway Port project in Baynes Sound, one of BC's most important marine ecosystems, especially given its connection to Deep Water Recovery, notorious for its environmental non-compliance.

CHEK News video coverage of concerns about a proposed shipbuilding, repair and recycling facility in Union Bay. Six environmental organizations, including ADIMS, believe that Baynes Sound is not the right place for such a facility. The short video includes interviews with Ian Munro, president of the Concerned Citizens of Baynes Sound,, and ADIMS chair Dorrie Woodward.

We have a new video featuring Tsawout Hereditary Chief Eric Pelkey (W̱ićkinem), taken during the recent HerringFest on Hornby Island. Chief Pelkey explains the cultural significance and loss of herring on the traditional territory of the W̱SÁNEĆ people and he also touches on their legal action against DFO and the Government of Canada.
Many thanks to Steve Hawkins for producing this video!
