1,047.2 LBS REMOVED IN JUST FOUR HOURS. 🌊♻️

Yesterday, between 10:30 AM and 2:30 PM, approximately 24 volunteers came together with Common Ground Community Care for another cleanup of the Tsawwassen Ferry Causeway.

The final total absolutely shocked us:

1,047.2 lbs of garbage and dumped material removed in just four hours.

That is more than half a ton removed from this shoreline by community volunteers in a single afternoon.

We cannot say thank you enough to everyone who came out, whether you were there for the entire cleanup or joined us for part of the day. Every bag collected, every piece hauled out and every hour volunteered contributed to an incredible result.

But while yesterday was an amazing example of what a community can accomplish, the amount of garbage we found should also be concerning.

One of the worst sections was where the gravel road ends and becomes a walking path, continuing toward the traffic light at the BC Ferries terminal. The concentration of garbage throughout that stretch was staggering.

And this isn't our first cleanup here.

Across our Ferry Causeway cleanups this year, Common Ground volunteers have now removed well over 1,800 lbs of garbage from this area.

At this point, this is bigger than an occasional litter problem.

It raises serious questions about ongoing illegal dumping, maintenance, enforcement and accountability.

Community volunteers are willing to help. We're willing to organize, provide equipment and put in the work.

But volunteers should not have to become the permanent waste-management solution for a shoreline that continues accumulating this much garbage.

We would love to see the organizations and authorities responsible for this area come together with the community to develop a long-term solution, including regular cleanup and monitoring, clearer responsibility for the area and meaningful enforcement against illegal dumping.

Strategically placed cameras in known dumping areas could potentially help identify vehicles and licence plates, allowing the appropriate authorities to investigate and issue fines where warranted. And if fines are going to act as a genuine deterrent, the consequences need to be significant enough to make someone think twice before dumping.

This is about reaching a point where 24 volunteers don't need to spend four hours removing more than half a ton of garbage from the same shoreline.

To every single person who came out yesterday:

Thank you. ❤️

You gave your time and energy to take care of a piece of our community that desperately needed it.

24 volunteers.
4 hours.
1,047.2 lbs removed.
One incredible community effort.

Sometimes the work is about more than the work. ❤️

Today, Common Ground had the opportunity to help Karen with her yard. After suffering a stroke, keeping up with the property had become difficult, and over time the growth started getting out of control.

We were able to spend the day cutting everything back, clearing out the overgrowth and giving her back a yard that feels much more manageable.

But one of the greatest parts of doing this work is often the conversations we get to have along the way.
We came there to help with a yard, but we also got the opportunity to sit, talk, hear some of Karen's story, and get to know another person in our community.
That’s what Common Ground is about. Meeting people where they are, helping where we can, and treating every person we meet with dignity, compassion and respect.

And sometimes, in the middle of all of that, we get a little glimpse into how God has been working in someone else's life — and we're reminded that there can be a lot more purpose behind a simple day of yard work than we realize.

Guided by compassion. Grounded in community.

A huge thank you to Dylan at Rain City Apparel for helping bring our Common Ground Community Care apparel to life!

From the very beginning, they were incredibly easy to work with, took the time to make sure everything turned out exactly how we envisioned, and delivered high-quality hoodies and T-shirts that our volunteers can wear with pride.

These shirts are more than just apparel, they represent a community coming together to serve others. Every volunteer wearing one is a reminder that compassion, kindness, and service can make a real difference.

We're grateful to have local businesses like Rain City Apparel supporting community initiatives like ours. Thank you for helping us look professional while we continue serving our neighbours.

We can't wait to see these hoodies and shirts out in the community at future cleanups and service projects! ❤️🤝

We're looking for suggestions for our next Common Ground Community Care cleanup!

If you know of an area with litter or illegal dumping that could use some help, leave a comment or send us a message. We'll scout the location, assess what's needed, and schedule a community cleanup if it's a good fit.

Together, we can make a real difference one cleanup at a time. 💚

We wanted to give a huge thank you to everyone who came out on Saturday to support our community cleanup.
Together, we removed 330 pounds of garbage from the area!

We are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to meet so many wonderful people and for the support we've received from our community. Events like this are only possible because of volunteers who are willing to show up and make a difference.

We would also like to extend our sincere thanks to ProKor Ventures for providing access to their ATV, which was invaluable in helping us remove larger debris from the site. Additionally, thank you to the Tsawwassen First Nation for granting access through the gate and helping share the event with members of their community.
We would also like to thank Neighbourhood Small Grants - Delta for their donation which helps cover the cost of supplies and disposal.

We're proud of what we accomplished together and excited to keep building momentum. With your continued support, we look forward to organizing more community cleanups and finding new ways to make a positive impact in the places we call home.
Thank you for being part of it.

Thank you to everyone who was able to make it out and help clean up yesterday. We started the day with 12 people and throughout the day more people joined in, the total number of volunteers came to 18 for the day.

We collected 18 bags and other miscellaneous items totaling a whopping 496lbs of garbage in 4.5hrs. The beach looks so much better, but there is so much more still!

We heard there is a need for clean up at other places around the city, please comment or message us where we should go next!
