May 28 is World Hunger Day, a global initiative to raise awareness about food insecurity and focus on the development of sustainable, community-led solutions to end hunger.
Food insecurity was the focus of our discussion yesterday with Surrey City Councillor Mike Bose, who joined our ED Barb Coates, Program Manager Andrew Wong and Board Director Chef Andrew George for lunch at Dan’s Diner.
Last year we rescued almost 280,000kg of edible food from generous corporate donors, and donated 90% of that to food banks in the community. The portion we held back was turned into meals
by the students in our Cook Training program, under the supervision of professional chefs in our teaching kitchen at Collingwood Neighbourhood House in Vancouver.
Through our donations to the community as well as sales of affordable meals at Dan’s Diner, we’re doing our best to help end hunger in the community.
If you’re interested in applying for our Cook Training program (no fee), please register on our website under Our Programs > Job Skills Training > Cook Training.
