Since 1988, 36 years protecting the “lungs of the lower mainland”

December 2024

There have been many developments and changes within Burns Bog Conservation Society since our annual general meeting in November 2023. These events have
required some adaptations to our education and restoration efforts, resulting in restructuring and shifting our focus to restore and conserve Burns Bog.

Due to the failure of the Society's fundraising activities during Fall 2023 and Spring 2024, our children's day camp program was cancelled and habitat restoration activities were reduced. Throughout 2024 the Board has focused on restructuring the Society, including letting go of our office space, conducting a budget review, and pursuing a membership with BC Nature. Metro Vancouver manages the Burns Bog Ecological Conservation Area (BBECA) and is responsible for implementing the Management Plan for Burns Bog completed in 2007. Our Board is involved in ongoing discussions with Metro Vancouver about common priorities and goals to benefit Burns Bog. Over the past few years our focus on education has not curtailed development adjacent to the Bog. Current threats to the “lungs of the lower mainland” are industrial and residential development, fires, and changes in the Fraser River and underground streams. Our primary goal is to restore the ecological integrity of Burns Bog by improving its resiliency against the stresses of a changing urban landscape.

Education remains crucial to achieving our goals, so aligning ourselves with BC Nature and other nature conservation organizations sharing common priorities, research and goals will amplify our voice and effectiveness.

Thank you for your generous support as we develop strategic partnerships to carry out projects designed to preserve and protect Burns Bog.

With gratitude,

The Board of Directors of the Burns Bog Conservation Society.
