The DELTA NATURALISTS were hard at work today, sharing information about all things nature, at the Metro Vancouver Landfill Open House. Today was school day and many of the budding-naturalist-students stopped by our displays. The highlights seemed to be the WOLF PELT, the MYSTERY BOXES and the INTERTIDAL GUESSING GAME.
We’re back there again tomorrow for the public open house. We hope to see you there.

Free webinar on June 18

We've been having so much fun with you in our spring live events series! The final event of Welcome Back Birds is coming up in a few weeks (June 18). We’ll chat with Cornell Lab experts about how to bring more kinds of birds to your yard and how to keep them safe and enjoy them all summer long. If you haven’t registered for our Welcome Back Birds series yet, when you register you’ll get a link to April and May’s event recordings, which were all about bird songs and migration. We'll also send you curated resources to help you go deeper into each of these topics, and a discount on Bird Academy courses. Plus one lucky attendee at each live event will be randomly chosen to receive a free Bird Academy course! Register here: https://hubs.la/Q048Db280

Note: If you already registered for April or May’s live events, you don't need to re-register. We'll send you a link to join the June event soon. Which species do you most enjoy having in your yard in the summertime?

Happy 15th Annual Bat Count! 🤩 It's time to head out in the evenings to count bats as they emerge from their roost sites. The counts are done at maternity colonies across BC found in buildings, barns, bat boxes, bat condos, and under bridges starting at sunset.
🦇🦇🦇🦇🦇🦇🦇

😍Between June 1 - 21st, we encourage two bat counts at each roost site. This is a count of all the females.

😍Between July 11 - August 5th, we encourage two more bat counts at each roost site. This is a count of all the females and the pups that are now learning to fly.

Where are the males? They mostly roost by themselves in trees, rock cliffs, or out in the open on buildings and are not found in the maternity colonies that we count.

🦇If you would like to get involved, please visit https://bcbats.ca/get-involved/counting-bats/.

👍If you would like to support our efforts with a donation, please visit https://www.bccf.com/donate/ and choose BC Community Bat Program in the dropdown menu!

🌊Orca Update: Federal government proposes increased distance regulations for the Southern Resident Killer Whales

The federal government has announced new distance regulations, increasing the distance vessels must keep away from Southern Resident Killer Whales from 400m to 1km. This change will harmonize BC and Washington State regulations.

More protections like this are a step in the right direction and we support the increased approach distance regulations.

However we continue to call for more and better habitat protection for the Southern Residents so they have safe, quiet places to hunt and recover.

Habitat protection is the best way to help the SRKW and other marine species to recover and thrive!

Learn more about this regulation change and provide public comments until April 21, 2026 here: https://gazette.gc.ca/rp-pr/p1/2026/2026-03-07/html/reg2-eng.html

And check out a detailed guide developed by our friends at Georgia Strait Alliance for tips on how to leave a public comment here: https://georgiastrait.org/work/species-at-risk/orca-protection/protection-measures-for-srkw/

The GREY WHALES along our coast are in trouble. The YouTube video in the link explains what the issues might be.

The response to last night’s webinar is very heartening and adds to the hope that there is an awakening and that the whales will receive the protection and action they so desperately need.

On behalf of the presenters who generously shared their expertise in last night’s webinar, “Plight of Grey Whales - A Wake-Up Call”, we hereby provide a link to the webinar recording. The link also leads to the call to action.

For all who watch the webinar, you are among those who know, rawly, how urgent the situation is. Please follow up by acting on the call to action and sharing it with others so they too may be moved to help.
