TEAMSTERS LOCAL 31 — At our General Membership Meeting on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, 168 members attended and took part in an important vote on the future of our Local Union.
The membership voted on a motion made in February by Catherine Gastaldello and seconded by Mark Bethel to amend the Bylaws of Local 31 by removing the eligibility requirement that any member seeking nomination for Local Union office must have attended at least 9 General Membership Meetings in the 24 months before the nomination meeting — also known as the 50% Meeting Requirement.
This rule has been part of our Local Union Bylaws for decades, long before the Stan Hennessy administration. The bylaw includes exceptions for members who cannot reasonably attend meetings so their eligibility is protected.
The Local Union has long maintained that General Membership Meetings are where members learn how the Union operates, how decisions are made, what responsibilities come with office, and what it means to represent the membership. Participation, commitment, and showing up have been fundamental principles in appointing new representatives, including the current Union Representatives and members of the Executive Board.
After Sister Gastaldello and Business Agent Mark Bethel spoke in favour of removing the eligibility requirement, and President Stan Hennessy spoke against it, the members cast their votes and made their decision overwhelmingly clear.
137 voted against the motion.
31 voted in favour.
The motion was defeated.
At the conclusion of the vote, President Stan Hennessy thanked all Teamsters on both sides of the issue for attending and participating.
At LOCAL 31, the democratic will of the membership was clear: members want representatives who participate in the life of the Union, understand its duties and operations, and show their commitment before seeking office.
Thank you to all the members who attended, both near and far, and took part in the democratic process of our Local Union. That is democracy in action. That is union accountability. That is the membership speaking for itself.
