We have some exciting news to share with you about a project we are working on at Delisle Early Learning Center…
Last summer, we grew a little bit of our own garden produce with the children at the Center. We used the wooden raised beds in our yard and some repurposed tires/smaller planters also to grow zucchini, spinach, lettuce, peppers, tomatoes, carrots, beets and even a few cucumbers. We also grew our own sunflowers and other annual flowers last year with support from donations of local community members and greenhouses.
We are looking to re-visit this work again this year and extend this learning experience with the children. In addition to what we grew last year, we hope to add in produce like potatoes, corn and herbs as well.
With tremendous support and sponsorship from Innovative Ag Performance Group (IAP) and their partner Adama, we have received funds that will allow us to add 3 large galvanized raised garden beds (one is shown as part of our post here.) This sponsorship was made possible by the growers in our community who purchased Adama products for their farms last season. This sponsorship has ties woven throughout our community and Delisle Early Learning Center is incredibly honoured to be a recipient for this contribution.
The addition of these 3 larger beds will serve a couple of different purposes in our play yard. First, they will allow us to grow a greater variety of garden produce that we can use as part of our meals and snacks. The process of growing food is something that has deep connections to who we are in Saskatchewan. Even more, there is something truly magical for children when it comes to growing plants/produce, etc. and we are excited to engage in this project together with them.
Second, these beds will help create some definition of space in our yard which will support our ECEs' work to create more intentional play zones throughout the yard for the children to engage in as they play.
This project could not have come to life as quickly as it has without the financial support we have received from Innovative Ag Performance Group and Adama. Thank you IAP and Adama – we are so excited to see it all come to life!
This past week, a team of our very own ECEs worked together to get our beds assembled and into place.
This coming week, we have 6 yards of soil coming our way to fill our beds. We have reached out to the Delisle Rebels Football team and we are looking forward to having a crew of team members join us for a few hours this coming Thursday afternoon to help move the soil into our beds.
Once the beds are filled with soil, we will begin planting. With the support of our Delisle Early Learning Center families we have strawberry plants, cucumber seedlings, bell pepper plants waiting inside our Center to be planted along side seed for snap peas, seed potatoes, jack-o-lanterns and more. We are looking forward to adding in butternut squash, tomatoes all donated to our project; we hope very much to have all sowed into their growing places before the end of May.
Thank you again, so very much to Innovative Ag Performance Group and their partner Adama; to the Delisle Rebels Football team, and to our own Delisle Early Learning Center families and staff. This work reflects the power and spirit of community in all capacities; we are incredibly grateful and so looking forward to the growing season ahead!
