We are deeply saddened by the tragic events that occurred today in the community of Tumbler Ridge – a community full of our friends and our family.

Our thoughts are with the families, friends and all of those affected, as well as with the entire Tumbler Ridge community as it grapples with this devastating loss. We want to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the first responders, emergency personnel and educators who acted in the face of an unthinkable situation.

A message from Vice Chair Leonard Hiebert on the tragedy at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School.

The Peace River Regional District (PRRD) is profoundly saddened by the tragic events of February 10, 2026, at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School. On behalf of the PRRD Board of Directors, I offer our sincerest condolences to everyone affected by this devastating loss.

The District of Tumbler Ridge is part of our regional family and this tragedy is felt deeply across the entire Peace region. Our hearts go out to the children, staff, family, community, Mayor Darryl Krakowka, Council and every resident of Tumbler Ridge as they navigate this incredibly difficult time. We grieve alongside you.

We are grateful to the RCMP, Emergency Services, STARS, all first responders and health care workers who acted swiftly and courageously to protect and care for members of our community. We also recognize the bravery of school staff who helped keep students safe during an unimaginable situation.

The PRRD is committed to supporting Tumbler Ridge through this tragedy and recovery. We encourage residents across the region to look after one another and to reach out for support when it is needed. To the residents of Tumbler Ridge – the region is here with you.

Media Release – Firefighter Injured at Scene

Just before 8:00am this morning, Dawson Creek Fire Rescue crews responded to a single vehicle motor vehicle incident on Highway 97 South near the Groundbirch area. While on scene one of our members was struck by a passing motor vehicle.

The firefighter was transported by ground ambulance to Chetwynd Hospital, and subsequently medevaced to Prince George for further treatment.

We would like to thank our colleagues at BC Ambulance and the Dawson Creek RCMP Detachment, as well as the civilians on scene that assisted with his treatment.
No further details are available at this time.
