BC Peace Pest Monitoring - Peace Region Forage Seed Association Welcome to PRFSA BC Peace Pest Monitoring page.

Here you will find information and updates relating to field crop insect pests and diseases for both Annual and Forage related crops. Funding for this project has been provided in part by the Peace Region Forage Seed Association, the BC Grain Producers Association and in part by the governments of Canada and British Columbia under the Canadian Agricultural Partnership, a federal-provincial-territo

rial initiative. Funding is administered by the Investment Agriculture Foundation of BC and the BC Agricultural Research & Development Corporation. This project is part of the Regional Adaptation Program delivered by the BC Agriculture & Food Climate Action Initiative.

The FaRM Field Trials program is now accepting letters of intent
Agronomists, working in close partnership with farmers and ranchers, are eligible for up to $30,000 in funding to conduct field trials that address one or more of these BMPs: rotational grazing, cover cropping and nitrogen management.

This initiative seeks to support work to overcome regional barriers to implementing these BMPs, troubleshoot obstacles to adopting these practices through practical, hands-on experience, and to grow extension capacity for these BMPs across Canada. This program also provides agricultural professionals (e.g. agrologists, agronomists, Certified Crop Advisers) and farmers and ranchers with the opportunity to build on-farm resilience, improve soil health, reduce emissions and enhance on-farm profitability.

Submit your proposals by November 23. Check the website for application details.

Pest Update for the Week of August 11 – August 17: Monitoring traps in canola, peas and wheat were pulled this week. In the coming weeks a Grasshopper survey, and Clubroot Survey is planned. If you have canola fields you would like sampled, please let the project know. Many crops are starting to harden and advance past susceptibility to insect damage. Aphids, and Lygus continued to be found in canola, cereals, peas, and alfalfa. Diamondback Moth larvae counts were below 10 individuals per 20 sweeps. Beneficial insects noted during this period were Lacewings, Bee Flies, Rove Beetles, and Lady Bugs. You may be seeing Lady Bug adults, pupae and larvae in fields. Growth Stages using the BBCH Scale were noted for the week as follows: Canola 84-97, Wheat 87-92, and Peas 89-99. Growing Degree Days (Based on a May 15 seeding, Base 5°C) provided through the Peace Agri Weather Network are Tomslake - 902, Rolla - 1002, Baldonnel – 913 and Buick - 963.

Tis the season to see Aphids!! Aphids have been found in Canola, Oats, Peas/Faba, Cereal and Alfalfa fields this past week. But did also see a lot of Lady Bug larvae, Syrphid Fly larvae, Carabid beetle larvae and many other predators. Not to mention also parasitic wasps, which also do a fantastic job in helping to control Aphids.
Also keep an eye out for Lygus bugs, damage has been seen on canola pods and numbers are floating continue to be 10-20 individuals/10 sweeps.

Pest Update for the Week of July 28 – August 3: Lygus in canola counts increased this past week, 15-25 individuals/10 sweeps. Threshold is 20-30 individuals/10 sweeps, during early to mid podding stages. Diamondback Moth economic threshold ranges from 200-300 caterpillars per square meter, larvae are being found in sweeps, but counts are below 15 individuals per 50 sweeps. Wheat Midge trap count decreased while wheat remains susceptible to damage; scouting is recommended if concerned. Threshold for Wheat Midge is 1 midge for every 4-5 plants for grade consideration, or 1 midge per 8-10 plants for yield consideration. Beneficial insects noted during this period were Lacewings, Bee Flies, Rove Beetles, Tachinid Flies and Lady Bugs. Growth Stages using the BBCH Scale were noted for the week as follows: Canola 69-81, Wheat 77-85, and Peas 77-83. Growing Degree Days (Based on a May 15 seeding, Base 5°C) provided through the Peace Agri Weather Network are Tomslake - 756, Rolla - 839, Baldonnel – 772 and Buick - 816.

Pest Update for the Week of July 14 – July 20: Lygus in canola counts ranged from 10-19 individuals/10 sweeps. Threshold is 20-30 individuals/10 sweeps. Diamondback Moth trap increased significantly with the highest catches of individuals per trap. Reminder that economic threshold ranges from 200-300 caterpillars per square meter. Wheat Midge trap count continues to increase while wheat remains susceptible to damage; scouting is recommended if concerned. Threshold for Wheat Midge is 1 midge for every 4-5 plants for grade consideration, or 1 midge per 8-10 plants for yield consideration. Grasshoppers have been seen between 3rd instar – adult range in ditches and field edges. Main pest species caught is the Clearwinged Grasshopper. Ditch thresholds are 25+/m2 while in field is 13+/m2. Beneficial insects noted during this period were Lacewings, Bee Flies, Tachinid Flies and Lady Bugs. Growth Stages using the BBCH Scale were noted for the week as follows: Canola 61-75, Wheat 60-75, and Peas 65-79. Growing Degree Days (Based on a May 15 seeding, Base 5°C) provided through the Peace Agri Weather Network are Tomslake - 599, Rolla - 669, Baldonnel – 617 and Buick - 646.

Threshold for Wheat Midge is 1 midge for every 4-5 plants for grade consideration, or 1 midge per 8-10 plants for yield consideration. Grasshoppers have been seen between 1st instar – adult range in ditches and field edges. Ditch thresholds are 25+/m2 while in field is 13+/m2. Beneficial insects noted during this period were Lacewings, Hover Flies, and Tachinid Flies. Growth Stages using the BBCH Scale were noted for the week as follows: Canola 50-72, Wheat 43-65, and Peas 59-67. Growing Degree Days (Based on a May 15 seeding, Base 5°C) provided through the Peace Agri Weather Network are Tomslake - 520, Rolla - 582, Baldonnel – 536 and Buick - 559.
