"Now that we’re older, we can see all the opportunities we’ve had, and we can see how much we’ve grown.”

Kian and Isaac started volunteering with their Grade 7 class, but young people don’t just need programs and places to connect during the school year. Summertime is when the lack of opportunities is felt the most.

In 2023 they joined our Summer Youth Volunteer Leadership Program and have stayed connected as volunteers ever since.

“We'd like to know that a new group of youth can come to The North Grove this year to take advantage of the same opportunities we did three years ago."

Hey gardeners! It's leek planting season! Leeks are a member of the onion family that require some specific planting steps to thrive.

Community Farm volunteers recently transplanted ours, so here's some planting tips for you!

1. To help the white part of the leek grow as big as possible, start "hilling" them through their growing life.

2. When you plant them, dig a trench 3 or 4 inches deep. Inside the trench, make holes for your leeks about 3 inches deep and 6 inches apart.

3. Before planting, "dress" the leeks. Trim the roots and the tips. (Only do this with leeks, not other types of seedlings!)

4. Pop the leeks into the holes. When you water them, the soil will fill in the holes.
The soil from the trench will slowly fill in over the next weeks and months, resulting in a nice tall set of leeks!

We recently wrapped up the spring session of our Prenatal Program with a North Grove tradition - a group baby shower!

For more than 25 years, our Prental Program has supported hundreds of expectant parents, many at the beginning of their parenting journeys.

This program is unique in that it has been built and shaped by community members and their needs, with a focus on mental health and relationship-building.

Participants shared how much they enjoyed the program and are blown away by the support The North Grove is able to offer to families and individuals.

Thank you to our friends at IKEA Halifax and Canadian Progress Club Halifax Citadel for joining forces on the community farm this week!

As we continue getting the garden ready for the warmer weather, this fun group got a taste of the sun on a hot spring day. We weeded the rice plot, set up lattice for beans, and buried a hose underground for safety.

We also came up with some ways to keep the chickens cool – we added a tarp to give them some shade, and assembled a new misting fan. 🐔
