We are seeking a dynamic Director of Food Programs & Volunteering! The ideal candidate is someone who loves complex problem solving, dreaming big about community program ideas, and mentoring and motivating a team.

This role oversees program design, delivery, and evaluation across all our Community Food Centre programming: community meals, food skills, farm, market, and volunteering programs, ensuring alignment with the organization’s mission and strategic plan.

Our annual Pumpkin Patch event was a little chilly, a little windy, and a whole lot of fun! 🎃🍂

More than 130 people joined us on the farm for an afternoon of pumpkin picking, cuddly farm animals, face painting, dancing, hot chocolate, costumes, and plenty of smiles.

A huge thank you to The Clunkers for keeping everyone moving and singing, our amazing youth volunteers and Child Development team for creating fun activities, and Halifax Stanfield (HIAA) for sponsoring this year's event.

Despite the fall weather, our community brought all the warmth we needed!

Last week's Family Playgroup was about immersing ourselves in Mi’kmaw culture.

We started with an activity that celebrates the nature and land around us - creating picture frames from native flowers, leaves, and sticks.

For circle time, Home Visitor Natasha "Kitpu" Lewis read "Sweetest Kulu" by Celina Kalluk, from which we learned about the gifts the animals from the Arctic brought to baby Kulu.

We also had fun singing and dancing to Mi’kmaw instruments: drum, ji’kmaqns, and a traditional baby rattle.

"It was so special and fun. I loved learning that the Mi’kmaw drum makes the sound of the mother's heart when the baby is in the womb," said a mom who was present.

This is one of the many ways we are celebrating Mi'kmaw History Month here at The North Grove.

The days are getting colder, but there’s still lots to bring us closer this November!

Join us for our Garlic Planting Party on Nov 3, to learn about garlic and help plant next year’s crop on the Community Farm!

Build skills for healthier relationships and everyday wellbeing with Boundaries for Better Living on Nov 12 & 19, in partnership with the Community Health Team.

Caregivers and little ones can also enjoy songs, stories, and playful activities together at Rhythm and Rhyme Baby Time on Nov 24!

The Beaded Corn activity in the playroom this week was all about learning from nature.

Using the husks from the recent corn harvest, wooden beads, and pipe cleaners, kids created their own Glass Gem Corn, just like the ones from the Community Farm. The activity supports hand-eye coordination, fine motor development, problem-solving skills, and concentration.

"I can make corn!" was the comment of a three-year-old,

"It looks like corn! I love it. I want to eat it!" said a nine-year-old.

Rosie usually volunteers with Family Supper, but yesterday she was the one behind the stove, leading a Food Demo for the third time!

She taught us how to make a delicious Roasted Tomato & White Bean Stew, a simple recipe packed with flavour.

Everyone was excited to try making this one at home. Thanks for sharing with us, Rosie!

A huge shoutout to local comic artist Pizza Cake Comics for donating the proceeds from their plushie sale to The North Grove!

With more than 200 plushies sold, this fundraiser brought so much support to the community. Thank you to everyone who helped make it happen. 💗

We almost wrote off this year's corn harvest... but we were wrong! We ended up with an excellent harvest of more than 100 ears of Glass Gem Corn, an heirloom popcorn variety known for its stunning multicoloured kernels. 🌽

Other harvests this week included purple sweet potatoes, radish, marigold, and coriander.

We've started to see frost over the Community Farm in the mornings. This means that the farm season is coming to an end. We are grateful for all the food grown and shared with the community, the lessons learned, and for each each person who helped make this season possible.

African Nova Scotian and Black families are invited to join The Cultural Connector Initiative of the Family Service Association for a special family portrait session at The North Grove Community Farm on Sunday, October 25, from 2–5 pm. Come dressed in your fall best! 🍂
