Common Roots Urban Farm - Woodside

Common Roots Urban Farm - Woodside Common Roots Woodside is an urban farm located on the grounds of the Nova Scotia Hospital. Individuals or groups can rent a plot to garden for the season.

Established as a shared community space, the farm is a place where people can connect with the land, grow food, and spend time outdoors in a supportive environment. CRUF - Woodside is an urban farm located in Dartmouth on the grounds of the Nova Scotia Hospital, which serves mental health and addictions patients. We use gardening as a way to promote physical, mental and environmental health. We of

fer skills training and educational workshops on growing vegetables; make healthy food more accessible to hospital clients, staff and the surrounding community; do gardening programming with clients at the hospital; and provide a space for growing food and flowers that’s supportive and welcoming. Common Roots - Woodside is made up of three components:

The Community Garden
This part of the farm is made up of individual raised garden beds. Tools are available for use during open hours, and compost and amendments can be purchased. Plots are 4' by 12' and the cost is $30 for the growing season. Several donated plots are also available for those who cannot afford the plot fee. The Market Garden
In this section of the farm, Common Roots staff and volunteers grow greens, herbs, vegetables and flowers. This produce is available for the public to purchase through a weekly online market. Some of the produce and flowers are also distributed to different parts of the hospital. The Common Plots
The common plots are small, circular plots lining the footpath that cuts through the farm. These plots include various vegetables, herbs, flowers, and berries. These are our 'nibbling plots' - everyone is welcome to taste and harvest the food grown here.

Things are blooming at CRUF Woodside and we've started to harvest!

The deer are getting some of what we're growing (despite our best efforts!) but there's still lots left for human consumption!

Some of you have been asking about our weekly markets. For a few reasons, including our late start and the high price of food, we've decided to donate what we grow this year.🥕🥕🥕

We asked our amazing community: “What’s your favourite part of the gardens?” 🌿

Here’s what they had to say! 💬

These are the moments that make CRUF so special, and every donation helps bring them to life.

Thank you to everyone who’s been cheering us on and supporting our fundraiser so far 🌱💛 Help us grow again by sharing or donating here 🌼

🌻☀️🐝 We’re SO close to opening the garden gates at Common Roots again!

🐌 After a season of change, both farm sites are getting ready to grow again—but we need your help to fully reopen!

🌞 We’ve just launched a community fundraiser to raise $20,000 in support of a successful growing season. From garden tools and language interpretation to staffing and community programming, every donation brings us closer to welcoming plotters, neighbours, and volunteers back to the gardens.

🥕 If you’re able, please consider donating or sharing the campaign within your networks!!!

🌱 In other very exciting news, Common Roots is now part of the Ecology Action Centre!

We have been busy settling the farms into their new administrative home and are feeling so supported by the EAC team and a wider network of committed partners including Nourish NS, YWCA Halifax, United Way Halifax, Feed NS, and JustFOOD Halifax (Halifax Regional Municipality and the Halifax Food Policy Alliance)

A huge thank you to our amazing supporters—the Mental Health Foundation of NS, Councillor Shawn Cleary, the Edwards Family Foundation, and the NSLC—for helping us get this far!

We’ll be back in touch soon with more spring updates, so stay tuned and share, share, share!

With gratitude and excitement,

🌾 Nicola & Hillary

We have good news. With some crucial help from the City of Halifax, the Ecology Action Centre, and Nourish Nova Scotia, we were able to buy back CRUF's assets on Monday! This is an important first step for Common Roots to continue to exist and hopefully flourish. We are so grateful for the people and organizations that have stepped up to support CRUF at this pivotal time. We are still figuring out the details of how we move forward, but are feeling confident that we will be planting seeds this Spring. We'll be sharing updates as they emerge, so please stay tuned!

An update from CRUF 🧡

On Thursday March 6th, we found out that our parent organization, MetroWorks, had declared bankruptcy.

On the same day, the CRUF Farm Coordinators and all MetroWorks staff lost their jobs, and all CRUF assets were seized.

In this time of shock and uncertainty, we are sending love and care to all the people, plants and critters for whom the farms mean so much. We don't have any further updates at this time, but if/when we do, we will share them here.

With love, Nicola & Hillary
