Common Roots Urban Farm - Woodside Common Roots Woodside is an urban farm located on the grounds of the Nova Scotia Hospital. Individuals or groups can rent a plot to garden for the season.

Established as a shared community space, the farm is a place where people can connect with the land, grow food, and spend time outdoors in a supportive environment. CRUF - Woodside is an urban farm located in Dartmouth on the grounds of the Nova Scotia Hospital, which serves mental health and addictions patients. We use gardening as a way to promote physical, mental and environmental health. We of

fer skills training and educational workshops on growing vegetables; make healthy food more accessible to hospital clients, staff and the surrounding community; do gardening programming with clients at the hospital; and provide a space for growing food and flowers that’s supportive and welcoming. Common Roots - Woodside is made up of three components:

The Community Garden
This part of the farm is made up of individual raised garden beds. Tools are available for use during open hours, and compost and amendments can be purchased. Plots are 4' by 12' and the cost is $30 for the growing season. Several donated plots are also available for those who cannot afford the plot fee. The Market Garden
In this section of the farm, Common Roots staff and volunteers grow greens, herbs, vegetables and flowers. This produce is available for the public to purchase through a weekly online market. Some of the produce and flowers are also distributed to different parts of the hospital. The Common Plots
The common plots are small, circular plots lining the footpath that cuts through the farm. These plots include various vegetables, herbs, flowers, and berries. These are our 'nibbling plots' - everyone is welcome to taste and harvest the food grown here.

We're havin a party! 🧄🧄🧄

Join us at the Woodside farm (300 Pleasant) on August 4th from 4-6pm to help harvest and sort our annual garlic crop, and then prep the garlic beds for fall planting.

All are welcome! Snacks and tools will be provided, just bring a pair of gardening gloves if you have them.

Parking is available behind the Hugh Bell Building (298 Pleasant) on the NS Hospital Site.

A few warm weeks at Woodside 🌻🌱🥕

1. Some volunteers helping us plant potatoes.
2. Here come the harvests. Keep an eye on the FFP down by the lower shed on the farm!
3. An awesome group of volunteers from Admiralty Insurance that visited this week to help us prep and plant some beds.
4. Mustards, mustards, more mustards. These will be saved for seed by a Nepali gardener.
5. Planting in the greenhouse (welcome to our seasonal helpers!)

🎬 We're excited to share that former CRUF staff Elizabeth will be hosting a screening of "The Hospital Farm," a short documentary about the history of the Mount Hope farm right here in Dartmouth.

It's a fascinating piece of local history, connecting the past to CRUF's home at the NS Hospital today. Catch it at Woodlawn Public Library on June 17th at 7pm. Free and open to all!

Volunteer shifts are starting soon! Join us for a weekly drop-in shift at the Woodside gardens (300 Pleasant Street) starting May 13th:

🌻 Tuesdays starting May 19th 1–3pm
🌿 Wednesdays starting May 13th 9:30–11:30am

You don’t need to commit coming every week, but we really appreciate when volunteers can come somewhat consistently through the season.

No gardening experience needed! Come as you are, get your hands in the soil, and connect with some neighbours.

All tools are provided. Just wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty and whatever feels comfortable for the weather and the work.

Prefer volunteering solo? There are always ways to help out, including early morning watering, evening weeding, or weekend tasks. Just let me know what works best for you.

CRUF is teaming up with Saint Mary’s University’s Centre for Leadership Excellence and the Change Lab Action Research Initiative for a hands-on community challenge focused on one of our biggest growing issues: urban deer damage.

Over two days, you'll work in teams to design a sustainable solution for managing deer in the City of Halifax, then pitch it for a chance to win cash prizes.

Kickoff: May 16, 10 a.m.–4 p.m.
Final Pitch: May 23, 10 a.m.–4 p.m.
