The latest Participaction report reminds us that too many children and youth in Canada still face barriers to being active, and that creating opportunities for movement remains an important public health priority.

What stood out to us this week was how closely the findings align with feedback we received from Dalhousie University medical students who volunteered with Kids Run Club across Nova Scotia this year.

While national reports often focus on the challenges, these volunteers saw firsthand what happens when children are given encouragement, positive role models and a supportive environment to move.

"Kids are so strong and motivated. I was genuinely inspired by the hard work I saw during the runs."

Another volunteer reflected on "watching all of the friendships form and the excitement of completing their first race."

Others described seeing students become more motivated as the season progressed, push themselves to achieve goals and discover confidence they did not know they had.

Perhaps most importantly, the experience also impacted the future physicians volunteering alongside them.

"It helped me feel re-inspired towards preventative medicine."

The ParticipACTION report reinforces the need for collective action to support healthy, active children and youth. Programs like Kids Run Club remind us that when we invest in opportunities for movement, we are doing more than helping kids run. We are helping them build confidence, connection, resilience and lifelong healthy habits.

Thank you to our Dalhousie medical student volunteers, teachers and school champions who helped make those opportunities possible this year.

Teacher Autaum Marshall from Truro Elementary spearheaded an inaugural trail run for students from four local schools, bringing together runners in Grades 2–6 for a course through beautiful Victoria Park.

The shade from the trees was a welcome bonus along the route, and the Freezies at the finish line were a big hit! Thank you to all the staff, parents and supporters who helped transport students to the park and cheer them on.

Very well done to everyone involved in creating such a fun and memorable movement opportunity for students.

There were plenty of "fields of fun" at Bible Hill Consolidated as students prepared for their final Kids Run Club fun run this week!

Keeping the club running strong is truly a team effort. A big shoutout to administrative assistant Laura Reynolds and teachers Tiffany Thomsen, Tristan Langley-Johnson, Danielle Boutilier and Angela McDowell for helping make another successful season possible.
