June is Pride month – a time to reflect, celebrate and show support for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. While many recognize Pride in June to mark the 1969 Stonewall Rebellion, Halifax celebrates its Pride Festival in July to honour a local milestone: the city’s first Pride march in July 1988. Born out of protest against harassment and discrimination, Halifax Pride remains rooted in both celebration and advocacy.

As we acknowledge Pride month, we also recognize the barriers many 2SLGBTQIA+ community members continue to face. Now and always, we remain committed to building an inclusive municipality where everyone feels seen, safe and supported.

Check out Halifax Public Libraries, St. Margaret's Bay Pride, Eastern Shore Pride - Nova Scotia and Halifax Pride to learn more about how to take part in local events in your community and show your allyship in meaningful ways.

You're up next Liz!!!

As Stepping Stone's Program Manager, Liz is equal parts educator, organizer, and arts-and-crafts wizard. She builds programs that support s*xual health education, informed-decision making, and personal and professional development - then somehow still finds time to turn recycled cardboard into something suspiciously impressive. Powered by music and a fierce commitment to community, Liz is a standout advocate who champions safer practices, amplifies voices that deserve to be heard, and brings color (and the occasional glue stick emergency) to every space she enters.

Moving on, next up is our Peer Support Worker/Outreach/Drop-in BackUp/everything in between, Nicole.

Nicole is Stepping Stone's Peer Support Worker and living embodiment of "I love you and I am going to remind you every five minutes." She's the first to cheer you on, the last to give up on anyone (actually never gives up), and the unofficial support human of the entire team. When she's not offering compassion and connection, she's assembling furniture with great enthusiasm and creative results (ask her about the chair she accidentally screwed to the tabletop.) She's also Alex's partner in crime when it comes to "finding" stray animals - plus that one injured pigeon she tried to rescue, which went poorly for both her and Jay. And in true Nicole fashion, she has taken over Kass' 0ffice and made it her own....even with Kass still in it.

(I'm pretty sure the image shows me in the back needing emotional support from the loss of my office.)

Long before “s*x worker rights” became language used in nonprofits, universities, or public policy, there was Margo St. James demanding something far more radical: dignity without conditions.

Long before "s*x worker rights" became language used in university syllabi, nonprofit annual reports, or public policy debates, there was a woman standing in front of cameras demanding something considerably more radical than terminology: dignity.
