We were lucky enough to encounter a painted turtle out on the trails at Shubie park. These colourful little turtles love the shallow water in the back half of the holding pond.

Painted turtles range in length from 13cm to 25cm with males on the shorter end. They are easily identifiable by their red, orange, and sometimes yellow stripes which decorate the edges of their shells and underside. Painted turtles are reptiles and rely on warmth, so they are only active during the day. They often warm themselves while basking on rocks and logs as pictured here. If youโ€™re hitting the trails, keep an eye out!

The Shubenacadie canal stands as one of the most infamous construction projects in Nova Scotian history (which is really saying something). Construction, from groundbreaking to operation, spanned a whopping 35 years. It took multiple engineers, hundreds of labourers, and relentless fundraising to complete.

Unfortunately, the culmination of all these efforts was a mere 10 year operational period. Shortly after completion, the invention of the far more popular railway quickly made canals obsolete. Sadly, the canal dream was dashed, but at least we got an amazing story out of it!

A huge thank you to the team at Stantec for volunteering their time to help clean up the Deep Cut trails in Shubie Park! ๐Ÿ’š

Last week, the group tackled the West Side Deep Cut Trail and part of the East Side Trail (in Shubie Park), helping to keep this part of the park safe and welcoming for everyone to enjoy.

We would also like to recognize and thank our dedicated volunteer, Mike Hughes, who helps coordinate this annual cleanup effort. Mike's ongoing commitment and leadership make a real difference, and events like this simply wouldn't happen without volunteers like him.

Partnerships like these remind us that we are better together. Thank you, Stantec and Mike, for helping care for Shubenacadie Canal trails and supporting our community! ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ‘

After a long cold winter, we can finally get back outside to visit our beautiful historic sites, trails, and waterways! As exciting as this is, it is important that we take proper precautions to mitigate tick encounters. As an NS biologist has pointed out, more snow cover and cold, damp weather have led to a surge in population (Tsicos, 2026).

Interestingly, snow cover actually helps ticks survive over the winter. Be sure to follow tick safety guidelines set out by the Government of Nova Scotia https://novascotia.ca/ticksafety

The Shubenacadie canal project was certainly a marathon, not a sprint. As we have covered, construction took the better part of 35 years... but why?

In short, for many reasons. However, there were certainly key challenges. In addition to work being halted for many years due to dwindling funds, building methods and materials caused many headaches. Most who worked on the project were accustomed to building canals in Europe where it was customary to build with granite stones and concrete. In temperate climates, these methods produced sturdy locks, but in the tumultuous winters of Nova Scotia they did not stand a chance. Our aggressive freeze-thaw cycle caused the stone work to degrade rapidly. Workers were then required to do significant rebuilds every spring, putting more financial strain on an already fiscally challenged project.

๐Ÿšถโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ•๐ŸŒณ A friendly reminder that e-scooters are not permitted on the trails in Shubie Park.

With many visitors, families, runners, and dogs enjoying the park each day, and with some trails being too narrow for safe shared use, the trail system has not been approved for e-scooter operation.

Thank you for helping keep Shubie Park safe and enjoyable for everyone! ๐Ÿ’š

The Shubenacadie Canal Commission extends its heartfelt condolences on the passing of Bernie Hart, a longtime volunteer, supporter, and friend of the Canal system.

Bernie was instrumental in helping establish the SCC and in protecting the heritage and natural environment of the Shubenacadie Canal for generations to come. His passion for preservation, education, and community service left a lasting impact.

He had a true passion for teaching and sharing the stories of the Canal with others. Whether he was leading guided tours, chairing the Board, actively participating in committee meetings, setting up meeting spaces for community groups, or simply stepping forward whenever help was needed, Bernie could always be counted on. He was someone who believed deeply in giving back and leading through action.

Bernie gave generously of his time, knowledge, and energy over many years, helping shape the SCC into what it is today. His dedication, kindness, and unwavering commitment to heritage, the environment, and public service will not be forgotten.

He will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege to work alongside him and call him a friend.
