Media Literacy! This week at Girls Link we talked about media’s portrayal of women and some of the messages that we get from media about beauty standards.

We looked at magazines and then we talked about the types of people we see in media, who is included and who is left in out, and what these messages tell us about beauty, women, and ourselves. 🌸

STEM night! Tonight we had special guests come to Girls Link to talk to us about their careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math!

Our first guests were Cass and Poppy, two marine biologists from who taught us about tagging marine life so we can monitor their behavior and advocate for Marine Protected Areas. 🐳🐟🦀

Our next guest was Courtney, an archaeologist. She showed us some rocks that were found in different parts of the Maritimes and could be used to make stone tools, and then we went outside for our archaeological activity! Courtney set up a grid and we used a GNSS rover to precisely map out where the special items (candy) were located! 🕵️‍♀️🗺️📍

Tonight at Girls Link we talked about body image! We learned about what body image is and how comparing ourselves to others can harm our body image and self esteem. 🚫🚫

One of the ways we can combat this is to think about all the things that our bodies can do for us. Instead of focusing on appearances, we celebrated what our bodies are capable of and all the ways we are grateful for our bodies regardless of our size and shape.

We ended the night by practicing giving and receiving compliments that were not based on appearances and focused on one another’s characteristics and strengths! 💜💙

Have you ever heard of Dreams Take Flight? This week our Girls Link president Julia, and one of our volunteers, Cody, spent the day with 140+ kids from Atlantic Canada who went on a one-day trip to Disney World! 🏰

Dreams Take Flight offers children facing mental, physical, or social adversity the chance to take a break from their everyday life to make some amazing memories.✨

This year the program is extra special to us because we had the opportunity to nominate 3 past Girls Link participants who went the trip and experienced the magic of Disney! We hope they had the best day EVER! 💜

Tonight we kicked off another series of Girls Link! We like to start week 1 with collectively developing our community standards, group rules, and group name!
This round the participants voted that they will be the “chicks” and the leaders are the “ducks”. Pretty cute eh? 🐥🦆
And BIG of themes of kindness and friendship in our rules and community standards. ☺️💜

Girls Link is a workshop series for girls and non-binary youth that promotes self-esteem, leadership, and empowerment. Developed in 2016 and later founded as a society in 2021, we cultivate a fun learning environment where youth can be free to be themselves while providing opportunities to build important skills. Some of the topics we discuss at Girls Link are leadership, healthy relationships, media literacy, and body image.
