FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Duncan Days Grande Parade Cancelled for 2026
The Duncan-Cowichan Festival Society has made the difficult decision to cancel the Duncan Days Grande Parade scheduled for July 11, 2026.
This decision was not made lightly. For many decades, the parade has been a cherished community tradition that has brought together residents, businesses, organizations, volunteers, and visitors in celebration of Duncan and the Cowichan Valley.
Over the past several months, the Society has worked diligently to organize this year's event. However, escalating event delivery costs, increasingly complex operational and safety requirements, and limited sponsorship support have created challenges that make it impossible to deliver the parade at the standard of safety, quality, and community experience that participants and spectators deserve.
We recognize that this news will be disappointing to many. We share that disappointment.
The challenges facing the Duncan Days Grande Parade are not unique. Across British Columbia and Canada, many long-standing community events are struggling with rising costs, increased regulatory and safety expectations, volunteer capacity pressures, and growing demands on organizers. While these changes are intended to support public safety, they have also created significant obstacles for community-based events that rely heavily on volunteers, local sponsorships, and limited resources.
The Society will be contacting all registered parade entrants and sponsors directly in the coming days to discuss refunds and sponsorship options. We are deeply grateful for the support that has already been shown.
While the parade will not proceed this year, the Society remains committed to bringing people together through community celebrations. We encourage everyone to support and enjoy the 39 Days of July festival, which continues throughout the summer and showcases an outstanding lineup of local entertainment, community spirit, and free public performances throughout downtown Duncan.
Looking ahead, we will be taking the opportunity to review the future of the parade and explore new approaches that are sustainable, affordable, safe, and accessible for our community. Our goal is to develop a renewed community celebration that can thrive for years to come while remaining true to the spirit that has made the Duncan Days Grande Parade such a beloved tradition.
On behalf of the Duncan-Cowichan Festival Society, thank you to the volunteers, sponsors, participants, community partners, and spectators who have supported the Duncan Days Grande Parade over the years. Your enthusiasm, commitment, and community spirit have made this event a valued part of our community's history.
We extend special thanks to the Duncan Daybreak Rotary Club, whose steadfast support has helped sustain the parade for many years, as well as to the City of Duncan, the Municipality of North Cowichan, local businesses, community organizations, and the many volunteers who have contributed their time, resources, and encouragement.
