Our Special Olympics BC-Creston AGM dinner and dance was a resounding success. Our athletes received certificates; our volunteers were recognized. New volunteers (new secretary, fundraiser coordinator and Public Relations coordinator) joined our local committee. Thank you to all the supporters who came out. Hi five to the committee members who organized the event, decorated, cooked, served and cleaned up. A special thank you to Elevation Gain who donated their time and talent to entertain us. Curling head coach, Ed Hager, gave a special recognition to the Creston Curling club for donating us free ice time. We are so grateful to all our donors, supporters and all the support workers/care providers/family members.

A genuine game changer. We’re forever thankful for the vision, research, kindness, and truly life-changing legacy of Dr. Frank Hayden, who passed away earlier this month at the age of 96.

Dr. Hayden’s groundbreaking research was the spark that ignited the Special Olympics movement. As a faculty member at the University of Toronto in the early 1960s, his study of children with intellectual disabilities revealed they were half as physically fit as their peers who did not have intellectual disabilities.

It was assumed that their low fitness levels were directly connected to their disabilities. Dr. Hayden’s body of work challenged that mindset – one that claimed it was the disability itself that prevented people from fully participating in play and recreation.

Through rigorous scientific study, Dr. Hayden proved that given the opportunity, people with intellectual disabilities could acquire the necessary skills to participate in sport and become physically fit.

In other words: Sport could have a transformative effect on the lives of people with intellectual disabilities.

Dr. Hayden’s research led to collaboration with the Kennedy Foundation that developed the first Special Olympics Games in the U.S. in 1968 and Canada in 1969. He continued to help expand the movement in the United States, and later played a pivotal role in establishing 50 additional Special Olympics organizations worldwide.

Dr. Hayden always believed “sport is the answer.”

“My idea wasn’t to find the fastest runner with an intellectual disability,” he said. “It was to make them fitter and healthier, so they have the opportunity to live their potential.”
