"The important thing is that you show up... that you join the responsibility of this collective learning journey."

As we mark National Indigenous History Month, our Director of Community Engagement, SJ, reminds us that solidarity is an active journey. Whether it’s supporting Indigenous authors and artists or attending a local powwow, let's take on the shared responsibility of listening, learning, and celebrating together. 🌊

As June begins, we have the chance to celebrate both National Indigenous History Month and Pride Month!

National Indigenous History Month is a time to acknowledge and honour the rich and diverse histories of Indigenous Peoples across Canada, and to celebrate Indigenous culture, achievements, and resilience.

Pride Month is an opportunity to show respect and support for the 2SLGBTQQIA+ community β€” whether they are part of our staff, the communities we partner with, or the network of friends and champions supporting our work.

At Water First, we’re proud to recognize and uphold the rich and diverse histories of the communities we partner with. We look forward to joining people across Canada and the world in celebrating diversity in all its forms. Stay tuned for content all month long and your chance to join in the discussion.

How do you plan to educate yourself about different cultures and identities this month?

All jokes aside, one of the things we hear the most is how close everyone gets during these internships. There are definitely a lot of technical elements to the program, but you can’t deny the straight chemistry here... haha see what we did there? πŸ’§πŸ§ͺ

May 5 is Red Dress Day, the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirit People.

This is not an Indigenous issue. This is an ongoing crisis that reaches from coast to coast to coast, and affects us all. It is up to us all to advocate for action and justice.

These families know that the crimes against their loved ones are underreported and may be as much as four and a half times higher than current statistics suggest.

Historically under-prioritized and subject to inadequate investigation, the actual number of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and Two-Spirit people may never be known. But we do know that the number continues to rise.
