Happy Lunar New Year, the Year of the Snake 🐍

Though the snake may get a bad rap across many Western cultures, the Snake symbolizes rebirth, regeneration, and the pursuit of love and happiness.

Food is a significant part of the New Year celebrations and in Chinese culture, it is tradition to celebrate with a large family reunion dinner on New Year’s Eve. ‘Lucky’ dishes that are usually served include steamed whole fish, dumplings and longevity noodles.

We are super excited to be celebrating Lunar New Year this Saturday (Feb 1) at the market. Lok Yee Bakery will be there with their Chinese Almond cookies that symbolize lucky Chinese coins and are meant to bring good fortune. Lok Yee will also have Taiwanese Pineapple Cakes as well as their regular freshly baked Hong Kong-style buns and cakes.

There will also be a scavenger hunt and crafts for the kids big and small. The Comox Valley Multicultural Society will be hosting the Taiwanese band Suona Gang, who will be performing a flash mob at the market.

A big shout out to Lok Yee Bakery and Jin from the Comox Valley Multicultural Society for helping to bring Lunar New Year to the market. We are grateful to be able to celebrate this special occasion with you and our community.
