Cortes Island Seniors Society

Cortes Island Seniors Society Cortes Island Seniors Society, an organization for people 50+ on Cortes Island and part of Cortes Housing Society, https://cortescommunityhousing.org/.

We provide programs for Cortes Island seniors, working closely with other Cortes Island organizations. We are an organization for seniors on Cortes Island. You are invited to join the Cortes Island Seniors Society if you are 50+. To find more information about our programs and activities, click on this https://www.cortesisland.com/tideline/show26s/Cortes_Seniors_Society link. Our membership is low

: $10/person. CISS started out as an Old Age Pensioners club (OAP), part of a province-wide group. Later, the members decided to form a separate social group. When the group became interested in building some seniors housing it formed the Cortes Island Seniors Building Society which became a legal non-profit society in July 1987. The organization also became a legal charity so it could issue tax receipts. Later, when we broadened our constitution to include things like the Seniors Helping Seniors (SHS) program, the name was legally changed to Cortes Island Seniors Society (CISS) in July of 2006.

Sunday, March 22 – Literary Afternoon

All are welcome to Literary Afternoon, planned for Sunday, March 22, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Linnaea Education Centre, Lakeview Room.

Five Cortes writers will be reading this Sunday afternoon: Annie Rosenberg, Monica Meneghetti, Soma Feldmar, Brian Hayden, and Florence Allen.

Please arrive on time, around 1:40, so that readers are not disturbed.

After an hour of readings, there will be time to chat with the authors and fellow attendees while enjoying refreshments.

These afternoons are organized by Seniors Helping Seniors and supported by Cortes Radio, which will later broadcast the readings. Donations, whether monetary or some goodies, are welcome.

Though these afternoons are organized for seniors, friends of the writers and family members are welcome to attend.

You may want to bring slippers or warm socks, as the floor may be cold.

I hope to see you there!

Meet Rick Bockner, who will share his experience of finding home on Cortes and what brought him here 44 years ago.

Follow Rick's adventures as he stumbles into some of the great events of the 60s, the Hippie diaspora of the 70s, strange and wondrous abodes on land and sea in the 80s, and wrestling raw land into a home in the 90s. Hear about the birth of some of Cortes Island's legendary creations – CKTZ Lip Synch, Love Fest, The Whaletown Decency Committee, Bud's Birthday, early settlements in Carrington Bay, and oysters 18" deep on the beaches. And probably a lot of other stuff as well. Should be fun.

Hope to see you there.
