HALLOWEEN SAFETY TIPS
Halloween is one of the most exciting nights of the year — costumes, candy, and plenty of fun! But with all that excitement, it’s important to remember a few safety rules to help keep everyone safe while trick-or-treating.

Here are some helpful tips to make sure your night is filled with treats, not tricks!

Have fun, stay alert, and show your family how responsible you can be — they’ll appreciate your good sense, and you’ll enjoy a worry-free Halloween! 👻

TIPS FOR KIDS:
1. Never go into a stranger’s house or even ring the doorbell for treats unless your parents are with you. Only visit houses with the porch light on!
2. Be careful when you cross the street. Look both ways and make sure there are no cars coming. Hold your brother or sister's hand and help out Mom & Dad.
3. If you are an older kid or young teen and going out with friends, make sure that your parents know where you are going and who you are going with. This may seem like a pain, but they are your parents and they love you. They just want you to be safe.
4. If you can drive and are taking a bunch of friends to a party, make sure that you have enough gas to get there. You don't want to run out on a dark street, all alone, like a bad horror movie! If your parents give you a curfew, be home when they say. It builds trust between you and them. If you are going to be late, call them and let them know. They are only doing it for your own safety.
5. Vandalism is never cool! Throwing eggs at cars and houses is not cool. Someone has to clean it up and it could be you, if you get caught. You can also be arrested and punished as a juvenile. It's never the right thing to do! Think about how you would feel if someone did that to your house or vehicle and how bad it would make you feel?
6. Hurting animals is never acceptable behavior! Some people use Halloween as an excuse to hurt animals and that is just wrong! Not only is it illegal in most places, but it's also punishable by law. You should never hurt a helpless living thing.

TIPS FOR PARENTS:
1. Always know your trick-or-treating route, especially if you are not going with your kids.
2. If you are not able to take your kids out, please make sure they are accompanied by a responsible adult.
3. Always set a curfew! It’s a good idea knowing when you can expect your kids to be home!
4. Kids will be kids! Explain the difference between childish horseplay and vandalism! Egg throwing is an absolute no, no!
5. Serve your kids a healthy meal before heading out. It prevents them from wanting to dig into their treats before you can check it.
6. If your kid carries a prop, make sure it is free of sharp edges. Accidents happened during horseplay. Also make sure their costumes are not too long which may cause them to trip and fall.
7. Talk to your kids about ‘Stranger Danger!’ No talking, leaving, or riding with a stranger.
8. Know what activities your kids will be attending (i.e. parties, school or mall functions). If they are going to be at a friends house, get their phone number and make sure you have met their parents.

Have a safe and happy Halloween! 🎃

COMMUNITY SAFETY NOTICE: HALLOWEEN PET PRECAUTIONS
As Halloween approaches and families prepare for an evening of fun and trick-or-treating, the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne is kindly reminding all pet owners to ensure their animals are safely secured during the festivities.

For the safety of our children, families, and pets:
🐾 Please keep dogs and other animals tied up or indoors.
🎃 Trick-or-treaters may be startled by unfamiliar pets (and vice versa).
🚫 Loose animals can pose a safety risk or cause unintentional harm.

Let’s work together to make Halloween a safe and enjoyable celebration for everyone in our community! Nia:wen/Thank you for your cooperation.
